Male Red-winged Blackbirds do everything they can to get noticed, sitting on high perches and belting out their conk-la-ree! song all day long. Females stay lower, skulking through vegetation for food and quietly weaving together their remarkable nests. In winter Red-winged Blackbirds gather in huge flocks to eat grains with other blackbird species and starlings. The Red-winged Blackbird is not an endangered species.

Often mistaken for this Red-winged Blackbird is the Tricolored Blackbird which has a small range, found almost entirely in California. Native to the United States and Mexico, this bird prefers inland wetland ecosystems, though it can live on arable land. The Tricolored Blackbird has no yellow on it's wings, but instead the red is flanked by white.The global population of this bird is not quantified but shows a marked and severe decline that necessitates inclusion on the IUCN Red List. For this reason, the current evaluation status of the Tricolored Blackbird is Endangered.

Took a long ride yesterday...not too much doing, but took these from my car window. He was really determined! I really didn't get the perfect shot I wanted. I am still playing with the lighting on my 500mm lens...Hmmm...one day!

She drove slowly, as this elegant lady awaited her male counterpart to arrive. She had seen the lovely male across the road singing loudly trying to woo her. She would have loved to have captured them together in their Springtime ritual, but alas, could not.

She saw him perched there as she was driving slowly on the rough road. She was sure the noise of the tires kicking up the gravel would cause him to take flight, but he stood his ground. This was her chance...she had missed so many before and she had no intention of losing this one.

This was taken soooo far away, I'm surprised it came out at all...obviously farther than my 100-300mm lens could capture. Fuzzy, but I liked the composition of the reeds so decided to post this image.
