I've grown to love collaborating with other artists on shoots. The end product always turns out so much better than if I had attempted it on my own.

Last week, I got together with a designer, model, and hair & makeup artist and put together a few different scenes. We only had an hour and a half, but we managed to create some pieces that I am pretty proud of. This is a portrait from the first look we shot.

I've had this idea rolling around in my head for a few weeks now, so I'm happy that I was able to get it out and make it into a photograph. These are the sorts of image that I love to create, the scenes with life and depth and a tale hidden in every pixel.

I've been considering my work lately, weighing my strengths and weaknesses, all in the pursuit of improvement. I realize that my technicality, my skill with lighting a scene and getting things right in-camera has been lacking and is not yet where I'd like it to be at this point.

I took a look back at a photo I had taken in the summer of Brian, and while I liked the concept, I wasn't sure about the lighting and overall quality. I decided to recreate it and see how it came together trying out different techniques. This photo is more in the vein of practice, but I still am proud of the end result.

The model is the very lovely Alison. I included an additional portrait of her taken this day in the comments.

I went home to Georgia for the holidays and made a point to visit my favorite waterfall.

January has proven to be a very busy and eventful month thus far. I've got so much on my plate and am up to my eyes in unprocessed images while continuing to plan and take more. But I'd rather be at this level every day than have nothing going on, so I love it.

I had a multi-page article published about my journey with photography in the Orange County Register today. It's pretty exciting to be featured in such a great newspaper and locally, which hasn't really happened to me before. I actually took this photograph specifically for the story and was followed by one of the staff photographers, who snapped a bunch of behind the scenes photos of it. I was asked to shoot something that was a good representation of who I am. I love stories. I've always loved stories. And here, I wanted to depict the subject 'floating' in those few brief moments when one finds himself becoming completely submerged in whatever story he is reading.

Southern California doesn't get much rain, but when it does, the landscape seems to transform almost instantly. Green sprouts up where there was only brown before, and the clouds reach down and hug the hills. I pushed through the rain and climbed this muddy hill barefoot to photograph the fog.

Upon returning home, I noticed that 98% of the photos were out of focus, so I had to make due with what I had. This meant scrapping a portion of the original concept, but I'm making an effort to share more of what I create, so I worked around it.

I shot this last month while I was back in Georgia visiting my family. My friend Lauren's dad owns a sailboat and graciously allowed us to use it for a quick shoot.

I have decided to make November a month of productivity when it comes to taking photographs. I'm making it my mission to post at least two photos every week in November. I need a good kick in the butt when it comes to posting, so hopefully this will be it.

This wasn't the main photograph I intended to create on this day, but I ended up liking it a lot more than the other. This was one of those cases where the story expanded and built upon itself as it entered post-processing and was given a little more depth there.

I think I unintentionally brought the Slender Man to life in this, and I love it.

I recently had the pleasure of collaborating with designer Michelle Hebert. I had come across her dresses online and was floored by their beauty... It took me a few months to gather the courage to send her an e-mail about a possible collaboration, because I'd never done anything like that before. However, I'm so glad I did, because not only was it awesome to shoot her designs, but it was great meeting and working with her and model Olivia Clemens. They were so sweet and fun to be around, and the evening lost that edge of pressure and felt more like hanging out with friends and creating art.

A few weeks ago, David, Liisa, Gurbir, Brian, and I drove out to the Mojave Desert in search of lava tubes left from extinct volcanoes. We took a detour to climb some enormous sand dunes, almost becoming sick with heat exhaustion along the way.

Flickr makes this look pretty awful, honestly. There's uncontrollable banding and grossness going on that I can't seem to do anything about.

The past week has been full of adventures with Gurbir Grewal, David Talley, Liisa Harmson, and Brian Oldham. We braved sand dunes in the desert, explored lava tubes, and shot photos all the while. On this day, Lindsey came out to model for everyone, so I captured a storybook scene with her and David.

I've been wanting to experiment lately with different lighting situations. I don't want to become trapped in only shooting under certain conditions like on overcast days or once the sun has set. I want to be versatile and adaptive.

The other day, I went out alone and took some self-portraits. Since I've been in California, I've had less time to myself than I previously had -- not something I am complaining about at all, but there's something I miss about going out every now and then on my own and being alone with my camera. It brings back the nostalgia of when I started and opens my mind up and allows me to create without limits.

To get into the character of an exhausted man with nothing left to give, both physically and emotionally, I jogged up and down this path several times, did jumping jacks, and push ups. (Let's not talk about the looks I got from passing bikers). I think it is important to submerge yourself into the character when acting as the subject of the photo.

Also, I am honored to be a part of the incredible [FRAMED] series this season. I traveled out to their studio in Idaho this past May to film with the crew (who were absolutely awesome and so welcoming). My episode went up today, and you can view it by clicking the following link:

Adolescence.

I've had this idea in mind for a few months now and was excited to finally bring it to life with the help of Brian, his cousin Rachael, Theodore the Octopus, and the empty house next door to his uncle's.

I wanted to portray the insecurities and tribulations of teenage girls.. something I don't know anything about.

The other day, Brian Oldham, David Talley, Robby Cavanaugh, and I adventured down to LA in search of the ruins of a burned-down mansion buried in a forested canyon. Once there, we found a left over bathtub.

It was great meeting up with David and Robby. I've admired both of their bodies of work for a while now, and it was awesome getting to work alongside them.
