Just to show that Shanghai is more than skyscrapers.... ;)

Fangbang Road (方浜路) is a narrow road in Huangpu District. Parts of the street in the vicinity of Yu Yuan and the City God Temple are re-developed for tourism as "Shanghai Old Street" (上海老街). Taken during a guided Shanghai Tour I gave to some friends. See where this picture was taken. [?]

Shanghai - EXPO 2010 China Pavillon

Two years after the EXPO the China National Pavillon (中国国家馆) remains a major attraction in Shanghai. See where this picture was taken. [?]

Located on the southern (main) part of the former EXPO 2010 area, the EXPO 2010 China Pavilion is a 63-meter tall structure (3 times taller than all other EXPO buildings surrounding it). Designed with the concept of an "Oriental Crown." The traditional Chinese "Dougong brackets" wooden beam structure element is used, giving it a rather traditional look. It's a steel sructure, clad in aluminium and glass panels - featuring 7 slightly different shades of red, to maintain a "single shade" appearance from the ground. The main colour is called "Gugong Red" (Forbidden City Red), representing the Chinese culture.

The southern part of the EXPO 2010 area with the China Pavillon is situated on the site of the former 94-year-old Shanghai Pudong Iron and Steel Company. This was relocated to Baoshan - and this did definitely improve the air quality in Shanghai downtown, Every time I'm on the EXPO grounds I still recall the brownish-red smoke coming from the steel works...

Shanghai - Lupu Bridge

Technicalities: this photo is SOOTC - Straight Out Of The Camera. No PP. Colours are due to the the use of a Cokin no. 197 "Grad Sunset" filter and setting the camera WB to "Shadow" while shooting. See here where this picture was taken. [?]

The Bridge:
With an arch span of 550m Shanghai's Lupu Bridge (卢浦大桥) has been the longest steel arch bridge in the world until it was surpassed by the Chaotianmen Bridge.

The Lupu Bridge spans the Huangpu River from the Luwan District to Pudong. It's located at the northern edge of the EXPO 2010 area and did provide a great overview over the EXPO. One may ascend the bridge for a fee, an observation platform is located at the top of the arch. Carrying tripods is prohibited.

The Paramount Ballroom, also known as Paramount Theatre (Chinese 百樂門 Bǎilèmén) is a prime example of preserved Art Deco architecture in Shanghai. The Chinese name means roughly "Gate to 100 Pleasures"...

It was completed in 1933, designed by the Chinese architect Yang Xiliu. It lay just off Bubbling Well Road (now Nanjing West Road) and was a meeting place for the wealthy elite of the Shanghai society - and also the elite of Shanghai's underworld. The most famous of old Shanghai's late night hangouts with music into the morning and drinks flowing freely.

The Ballroom lasted under its original owners before going bankrupt in 1936. In 1937 it was converted into a taxi dance hall featuring Chinese dance hostesses, which it remained until 1949.

Closed at the revolution, it was re-opened in 1956 as "Red Capitol Cinema" featuring the usual propanda movies. Again closed in the Cultural Revolution it became defunct and dilapidated.

In 2001 it was restored by Taiwanese investors and re-opened as ballroom. Due to lack of revenue some floors were converted into a disco in 2006 and only the forth floor ballroom remains in original style. See where this picture was taken.. [?]

Shanghai - Zhejiang Road Bridge

Local folks hangin' out at night at Zhejiang Road Bridge (浙江路桥). This bridge leads from Shanghai's Huangpu District into Zhabei District, crossing Suzhou Creek. The Zhejiang Road Bridge is another veteran, of similar age as the Garden Bridge.

Zhejiang Road around the bridge is one of the few streets in Shanghai where one still can find the old China cliche with bicycles and motorcycles dominating the traffic scenery. Photo taken from the Zhabei side. See where this picture was taken.. [?]

The Shanghai Center (上海中心) will be the tallest building in Shanghai (projected 632.0 m) once construction is completed in 2014. It will then also be the World's first group of three supertalls together. The Shanghai Center is designed by the American architectural firm Gensler.

Quick shot while staying late at work - the title is a little bit sensational. There were two tropical cyclones on tracks towards Shanghai, this caused sort of a panic within the Chinese bloggers world.

Actually nothing really happened, none of the two cyclones came even close to really hitting Shanghai. Bit of high water on the Huangpu River. And not even gale force winds in the city. Out in Hangzhou Bay and the Yangtze Mouth the wind did just reach storm strength. See where this picture was taken.. [?]

"Tomorrow Square" is the name of this skyscraper, located at 399 Nanjing Road West. Chinese name: 明天广场. Mixed use, office and hotel, the upper floors house the JW Marriott Hotel. See where this picture was taken.. [?]

59 Floors, 238 m tall (functional roof height - it's 284 m to the top of that decorative pyramid).

Former Pathé Building aka Pathé Villa aka French "La Villa Rouge" and 小红楼 (xiǎo hónglóu) in Chinese. Located in Xujiahui Park. Constructed in 1921 as wood and brick structure, the red bricks gave it the French and Chinese name. This building used to be the Asia-Pacific headquarters of the Pathé recording company, called Pathé Orient, and is therefore regarded as the birthplace and cradle of the Chinese recording industry.

Today the Villa is used as a restaurant - and Pathé is known as EMI. See where this picture was taken.. [?]

The building on the right is the Yong'An Department Store (aka: Wing On Building) - click here for more about it.

The narrow, 19-story tall building with the Giordano™ "I ♥ Shanghai" advertisement is the "Seventh Heaven Hotel" (七重天宾馆). It was built in 1932 by the same brothers that founded the Wing On Group and at the time of it's construction it was just called the "new wing" of the Wing On Building, connected to it by a footbridge. The "Seventh Heaven", on the seventh floor of this building was founded in 1937 and was once one of the premier restaurants in Shanghai, catering for the rich and famous.
