Nutritionist Ivette Otárola works at Casa de Alivio San Cosme in the La Victoria district of Lima, Peru. The home provides assistance to tuberculosis patients and their families, among other health services, thanks to Global Fund financing through CARE Peru.

“The users feel at home here when they come to take their medicine,” says Ivette.

In addition to monitoring and observing tuberculosis treatment, the casa hosts workshops on everything from proper nutrition to the psychological aspects of living with the disease.

Healthy Kids in San Pedro

While the deaths from malaria in San Pedro has been low, the illness was once extremely high – children were contracting the disease up to two or three times per month. Global Fund-supported prevention and care has reduced the rate of infection more than 12-fold, enabling children to stay in school.

TB Clinics, Before and After

This small tuberculosis clinic (top) in Huaycán, Peru, is responsible for serving the 2 million people who live in the area.

A new TB Excellence Center (bottom), financed in large part by the Global Fund, sits just yards away. Scheduled to open soon, the center will provide treatment and care with modern equipment and proper ventilation. The dedicated nurses will benefit, as well.

“This is like a palace for us,” says nurse Victoria Zegarra. “It makes us proud to come to work.”

Silvia Condor Helps TB Patients in Huaycán

Silvia Condor, once a tuberculosis patient, now leads an association of people affected by tuberculosis in Huaycán, Peru, a township outside of Lima. The epidemic is particularly concentrated in Huaycán, where overcrowding leads to the rampant spread of the disease.

Silvia’s association, supported by Global Fund financing through CARE Peru, helps patients and their families find “a dignified place to live,” she says.

Silvia is committed to continuing this work long after her association has graduated from Global Fund financing. “I tell people, ‘We have a place for you … because of our allies: Global Fund and CARE Peru.’”

Today, March 24, 2011, marks World TB Day. A current major problem in fighting TB is outdated tools. TB is preventable and treatable, but the most common TB test is more than 125 years old and misses half the cases. By the time most TB patients are correctly diagnosed and treated, they may have unknowingly infected many others – creating an endless cycle. (Andhra Pradesh, India, 2005)
