Like many farmers in Ghana, Faustina Klutse (right, with her daughter, Bossoh) was reluctant to experiment with new crops. She changed her mind after listening to a Farm Radio program which talked about a new drought- and disease-resistant variety of rice that would thrive in Ghana and fetch a good price at the market. She followed the advice on the program and joined a local listening group to share advice with others. (Tongu District, Ghana, 2010)

Today, the orange-fleshed sweet potato is safeguarding children’s sight and improving the health and income of families in communities across Uganda, Mozambique, and other countries in Africa where the sweet potato is a mainstay of diets. One study showed that vitamin A intake among young children doubled in households that received the vines and grew these new varieties.
