i did not stay here, i just took the elevator to the top floor to get some views of the city. the hotel is the closest thing bamako has to a skyscraper (actually, it's the closest thing in the whole country). it towers over every other structure around

mohammed ran "cafe mohammed," the only vegitarian restaurant in all of bamako with a rastafarian theme. it was also directly across the street from the catholic mission, the cheapest place to stay in all of bamako. not surprisingly, it was a serious backpacker hangout. mohammed was an incredibly nice guy, i had to take his photo

timbuktu is surrounded by the sahara, so i walked north at the end of the day to watch the sunset in the desert. the farther i walked the fewer of these scrubby trees there were and the darker it got

it stands for "centre de recherches historiques ahmed baba," a facility that seeks to preserve and restore thousands of gorgeous ancient islamic manuscripts that were all over the city before they were collected here. i wish i could have gotten some photos of their work. further info is here

as i was wandering through the empty streets, a door opened and a bunch of well-dressed people emerged from one of the buildings. it turned out to be a wedding party.

timbuktu was so remote and hard to get to, it was once of the last cities reached by european explorers. but in the 19th century, for the first time, a handful of europeans made it there and stayed for a while. this is where gordon laing stayed after he made it to the city. laing, a scot, is usually credited as being the first european to make it to the city, but he never made it back (he was killed on his way home)

the oldest mosque in the city. timbuktu gets so little rain, the mud-mosques don't melt here. so they can age, without being rebuilt every year, unlike most of the rest of mali
