My birthday present this year was ‘400 photographs’ by Ansel Adams, a book of unimaginable beauty and a wonderful reminder of why I became so interested in photography in the first place. It also provided the prompt for something i’ve been meaning to do for a long while now... these photos were all taken a few years ago on a trip to The States with a cheap slr and kit lens. The images I took were mainly holiday snaps, and have largely been archived up until now. Seeing Adams’ awe-inspiring monochrome interpretations of these landscapes again has inspired me to dust off my hard drive and get creative with my own images. A handful seemed worthy of conversion to black and white. I hope one day to return to these scenes in real life... fond memories...

Welsh coast, somewhere North of Aberystwyth, Spring 2012

An evening ramble across the rocks on one of the few 'nice' Spring evenings so far. I was surprised at how colourful this image came out, with only a few minor tweaks in photoshop to the original RAW file. Perhaps it was the polariser, perhaps it was not shooting directly into the sun, which always seems to create much deeper, darker shadows in my landscape shots. The compromise is a less colourful sky, but thankfully the sunset here spread across the whole of the horizon and even with a wide angle lens there was enough splashes of colour to go around.
