PLEASE VIEW LARGE ON BLACK IN LIGHTBOX PRESS "L"

After having a look at the sat pix during the day, I could see a large band of high cloud sweeping across the country and the timing looked great for an impressive sunset across the Blue Mountains... So I headed up to Wentworth Falls lake to grab some shots of the spectacular show reflecting on the waters surface...

And when the sunset occurred, I gotta say, it was an impressive one and the colour hung around for quite some time!

And when the sunset occurred, I gotta say, it was an impressive one and the colour hung around for quite some time!

So I guess there is some benefit in knowing a little about how to read weather maps and models!

This is taken up the road from my Mums house in Scarborough, QLD...

Scarborough is a residential suburb of the Moreton Bay Region at the northernmost of the Redcliffe Peninsula, approximately 30 kilometres (19 mi) north-northeast of Brisbane, the state capital of Queensland, Australia. Officially established on 27 March 1971, the suburb used to act as a gateway to Moreton Island via the Combie Trader barge, but this service was recently sold.

A stunning sunset tonight that I thought I had to chase given the failure to capture last night's beauty! This one was taken at Wentworth Falls lake in the Blue Mountains...

The colour was so rich for a little while there, and the water and reflection always help a simple shot like this have some life!

The late afternoon light filters across the Wentworth Falls Lake in the Blue Mountains.

Taken with NDx400

Wentworth Falls was another of the towns in the Blue Mountains to benefit from an influx of holiday makers in the 1880s. The Wentworth Hotel, later known as the Grand View Hotel, opened circa 1883, with the current building constructed in 1930. Wentworth Falls was also known for its two open-air tuberculosis sanatoria, the Queen Victoria Home opening in 1903 and Bodington Sanatorium in 1908.

Wentworth Falls, 98 kilometres from Sydney, is today a starting point for numerous walking tracks and scenic views of in the Blue Mountains. In 2001 the Census recorded the town's population as 5,390 people.

A former railway dam at Wentworth Falls, created by damming Jamison Creek in 1903, is now Wentworth Falls Lake.

SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE ORIGINS

Planning for the Sydney Opera House began in the late 1940s, when Eugene Goossens, the Director of the NSW State Conservatorium of Music, lobbied for a suitable venue for large theatrical productions. The normal venue for such productions, the Sydney Town Hall, was not considered large enough.

By 1954, Goossens succeeded in gaining the support of NSW Premier Joseph Cahill, who called for designs for a dedicated opera house. It was also Goossens who insisted that Bennelong Point be the site for the Opera House. Cahill had wanted it to be on or near Wynyard Railway Station in the northwest of the CBD.

A design competition was launched by Cahill on 13 September 1955 and received 233 entries, representing architects from 32 countries. The criteria specified a large hall seating 3,000 and a small hall for 1,200 people, each to be designed for different uses, including full-scale operas, orchestral and choral concerts, mass meetings, lectures, ballet performances and other presentations.

The winner, announced in 1957, was Jørn Utzon, a Danish architect. According to legend the Utzon design was rescued from a final cut of 30 "rejects" by the noted Finnish architect Eero Saarinen. The prize was £5,000. Utzon visited Sydney in 1957 to help supervise the project.

What a magnificent display that was put on for us as the sun headed for the horizon!

The most famous of landmarks as far as Sydney goes and it the same photograph. They line up beautifully from Mrs Macquaries Chair to the East of the Harbour.
