Launch of Skynet 5D Satellite Onboard Ariane Rocket in French Guiana

A Skynet 5D satellite is launched onboard an Ariane rocket from the Kourou spaceport in French Guiana, South America.

A new satellite which will provide secure military communications for UK Armed Forces was successfully launched in December 2012.

The extra lines of communication will benefit personnel deployed in Afghanistan and other parts of the world, including the Falklands, Cyprus and on ships at sea.

It is the fourth satellite of the Skynet 5 project to be put into space since 2007 under a £4bn Private Finance Initiative (PFI) programme with Astrium, who built the satellite and service providers Astrium Services. The Skynet project sustains approximately 800 jobs between the company’s sites in Stevenage, Portsmouth and Corsham, Wiltshire.

When in space, Skynet 5D will travel at speeds of around 6,200 miles per hour and is expected to cover around 765 million miles during its time in orbit.

A computer generated image of the Skynet 5D satellite in orbit.

The Secretary of State for Defence the Right Honorable Philip Hammond MP talks with Royal Navy submariners during a visit to HMS Vigilant at HM Naval Base clyde, Scotland in October 2012.

The Defence Secretary announce and additional £350M worth of funding for the next stage of design work for Successor, the future generation of UK nuclear-armed submarines.

This investment will sustain 1,200 UK jobs and makes clear the Government’s firm commitment to maintaining continuous at sea deterrence for future decades. The funding follows the initial £350M of design work announced earlier this year.

TA Reservist Soldier in Basic Training

A Territorial Army reservist soldier(front) is pictured being trained by a regular soldier at the TA Recruit Centre in Ballykinler, Northern Ireland.

The Recruit Training Centre in Ballykinler, Northern Ireland (NI) is the setting as a new batch of Territorial Army (T.A) recruits who are being put through their paces on Exercise Shamrock Challenge. Specifically designed as Basic Training for NI Based T.A recruits, it will teach them skills to use during their careers within the T.A.

The training being given is being taught by Regular and T.A soldiers, seasoned NCOs of The Army Training Regiment Pirbright and hosts a mix of cap badges. The Recruits are following the same procedures as their full time counterpart’s all-be-it in a shorter timeframe.

They are taught a mandatory syllabus on a host of military topics and are working towards a final Pass Off Parade much like regular soldiers at the end of Basic Training.

Tedworth House in Tidworth, Wiltshire is the flagship of five UK wide Personnel Recovery Centres which form the Defence Recovery capability (DRC).

Tedworth House is a place of opportunities, providing education, training, sport and adventure in a relaxed, understanding and caring environment. State of the art facilities and dedicated staff aid the road to recovery.

Tedworth House is ideally located for its role as a Personnel Recovery and Assessment Centre (PRAC). It is based in the garrison town of Tidworth and the surrounding area is home to many military units. Soldiers Celebrate Queen's Diamond Jubilee in Afghanistan

Image: (L-R) Trooper Lewis McCormick 19, from Oldham and LCpl Thomas Constant 24 from Bournemouth (previously served on Op Telic 10) of the King's Royal Hussars enjoy an impromptu Diamond Jubilee tea party.

Today, 31/05/2012, soldiers from the Kings Royal Hussars joined in the celebrations for the Queens Diamond Jubilee with a unique tea party of their own whilst serving in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.

During a break from patrolling in their Mastiff armoured patrol vehicle Trooper McCormick and LCpl Constant made the time to break out some bunting sent from home by family and deck out their vehicle in the most patriotic of ways.

With the help of some tea and biscuits kindly donated to all Forces personell on Operations by Fortnum and Mason to mark the unique occasion of Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee and a tea-set liberated from their Commanders office for the day, the soldiers of the Quick Reaction Force (QRF) took time to toast Her Majesty's tremendous achievement.

LCpl Constant said:

"The boss has got his tea set out here and has had merciless ribbing about it from the lads the whole tour. When the bunting and flags arrived in the post we felt it was too good an opportunity to miss to put it to good use"

Trooper McCormick added:

Everyone at home is busy celebrating the Diamond Jubilee and although we are a long way from home we still wanted to get involved."

Cyber Security at the Ministry of Defence

As part of last year's Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR) the Prime Minister announced that our ability to detect and defend against cyber attacks would be crucial to our national security, so important that it was elevated to a 'Tier 1' threat alongside issues such as terrorism and international military crises.

Since then, work to embed the culture of operating in cyberspace across the defence community has been taking place in earnest with the Defence Cyber Security Programme being set up to drive the necessary changes.

Now, under the leadership of Major General Jonathan Shaw, Assistant Chief of the Defence Staff (Global Issues), work on the programme is moving ahead quickly and the Cyber Security Policy Team was stood up on 1 April 2011 to develop a unified and integrated response to the threat of cyber attack.Photographer: Harland Quarrington

Soldiers from 1 Royal Welsh Practice Casualty Evacuation on Exercise in Pembrokeshire, Wales

Soldiers from 1 Royal Welsh are pictured carrying a simulated casualty during an exercise in Wales.

More than 300 soldiers from 1st Battalion The Royal Welsh (Royal Welch Fusiliers) have been embarking on a five day live-firing exercise on the Castlemartin ranges in Pembrokeshire from January 29 to February 2, 2012.

The exercise tested the combined arms firepower and put soldiers through their paces in the most demanding and realistic scenarios available outside of theatre.

On Wednesday, February 1, B Company, 1 R Welsh, were on the platoon level ranges firing at 'live' targets, working with military vehicles and practicing their casualty drills. The Fusiliers will also be practicing their drills to counter IEDs.

This exercise is conducted in preparation for a six-month tour to Afghanistan in 2012 as part of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).

Some of those involved have previous Afghan experience from their 2009 deployment although for some troops this will be the first time they have trained for an operational tour.

Camp Bastion War Memorial in Afghanistan During Remembrance

Photograph shows the War Memorial at Camp Bastion that remembers all British service personnel that have been killed on Operations in Afghanistan since the start of hostillities in October 2001.

"When You Go Home Tell Them Of Us And Say,
For your Tomorrow, We Gave Our Today"

The words are attributed to John Maxwell Edmonds (1875 -1958), an English Classicist, who had put them together among a collection of 12 epitaphs for World War One, in 1916.
