HMS Montrose Firing a Harpoon Missile

Royal Navy warship HMS Montrose flexes her warfighting muscle with the successful firing of a Harpoon missile - capable of destroying a target up to 80 miles away.

The anti-ship missile was fired at more than 800 mph into a specially-designed target barge in the Scottish exercise areas, obliterating it within minutes, and demonstrating the type of lethal power the warship wields.

The Royal Navy continually tests its personnel on exercises and training serials which are designed to build a world-class Service, and putting the weapons through their paces is part of ensuring their powerful capability.

Principal Warfare Officer Lieutenant Ben Evans said: “The intensity and stress of conducting complex warfare training increases tenfold when you know that there is almost a quarter of a tonne of warhead on the end of the live missile you are about to fire – but so is the satisfaction increased when you successfully achieve your goal.”

HMS Montrose, which is based at Devonport Naval Base, fired the Harpoon missile during a specialist training week following her participation in Exercise Joint Warrior – a huge multi-national exercise off the coast of Scotland.

Signaller with Manpack Radio Equipment in Afghanistan

A Signaller with the Royal Signals with a manpack radio, part of the Bowman tactical communications system used by the British Armed Forces, on patrol in Afghanistan.

The BOWMAN family of tactical radios provides the British Army with HF, VHF and UHF voice and data communications from formation headquarters forward to the fighting units.

Bowman exploits the latest developments in radio and computer technology to meet the needs for services well into the 21st century.

Designed to provide an integrated digital communications network interfacing with higher level systems and networks such as ISDN, Skynet V,Cormorant and FALCON.

Commanders at all levels are given secure voice and data communications as well as an integrated Global Positioning System (GPS).

Royal Navy Astute class submarine HMS Ambush is pictured alongside the forward support vessel RFA Diligence in Gareloch, HMNB Clyde, Scotland.

Forward Support is that element of Naval Operational Logistics by which the military capability of Fleet Force Elements can be sustained away from UK base ports in war fighting or non war fighting environments. RFA Diligence is a sophisticated, multi-purpose ship, fitted with a wide range of workshops for hull and machinery repairs, as well as the facilities for supplying electricity, water, fuel, air, steam, cranes and stores to other ships and submarines.

Officers and soldiers from 1st Battalion The Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment (Queen's and Royal Hampshire’s) (1 PWRR) acclimatize to the soaring heat and prepare their equipment after recently deploying to Kenya on Exercise Askari Thunder 6.The aim of the exercise is to put the 1PWRR Battle Group through Hybrid Foundation Training(HFT) . The exercise consists of multiple stages and is conducted over a six week period.

Soldier Using Personal Role Radio

A soldier of The King's Royal Hussars on patrol during Operation Zmaray Luma near Lashkar Gah in Afghanistan, equipped with Personal Role Radio (PRR).

The Personal Role Radio (PRR) is a small transmitter-receiver that allows infantry soldiers to communicate over short distances.

Effective even through thick cover or the walls of buildings, PRR enables section commanders to react quickly and efficiently to rapidly changing situations, including contact with the enemy, greatly increasing the effectiveness of infantry fire teams.

PRR is issued to every member of an eight-strong infantry section.

The system is easy to use through its simple man machine interface, is unobtrusive and comfortable to wear yet is rugged enough to sustain the harshest environments presented by active front line operations.

The use of PRR has significantly enhanced combat effectiveness by providing all informed communications to front line soldiers, replacing traditional methods based on shouting and hand signals.

RAF Merlin Mk3 helicopter is pictured during Exercise Pashtun Jaguar in the UK.

Pashtun Jaguar provides essential pre-deployment training for Joint Helicopter Command (JHC) personnel,
whilst also delivering aviation support for the Battle Groups preparing to deploy on Operation HERRICK.

The Exercise runs over the period 10 Feb to 8 Mar 2013 on Salisbury Plain. Exercise Pashtun Jaguar
provides the aviation support to the much larger ground exercise for the Brigade troops, Ex Pashtun Dawn.

The Exercise prepares JHS personnel and Army Brigade troops for the threats that they will face and combat together in Afghanistan

A Royal Navy officer is picture on the bridge of Type 45 destroyer HMS Diamond.

The Portsmouth-based Type 45 destroyer has been putting her sailors to the test as she sails to meet the rest of the Task Force near Cape Wrath for a Combined Amphibious Landing Forces Exercise later this week.
HMS Diamond, which is affiliated to the cities of Aberdeen and Coventry, is to provide the air defence role for the exercise – which will see Royal Marines storm the remote area by landing from the sea and air under the cover of warship firepower.

Consent form obtained and held at FRPU(E), HMS Excellent, Portsmouth.

As warships and aircraft from across the Royal Navy begin a huge maritime exercise off the coast of Scotland, HMS Diamond has been gearing up for her role with a series of training drills.

The Portsmouth-based Type 45 destroyer has been putting her sailors to the test as she sails to meet the rest of the Task Force near Cape Wrath for a Combined Amphibious Landing Forces Exercise later this week.
HMS Diamond, which is affiliated to the cities of Aberdeen and Coventry, is to provide the air defence role for the exercise – which will see Royal Marines storm the remote area by landing from the sea and air under the cover of warship firepower.
