Royal Navy Type 45 destroyer HMS Diamond is pictured turning at speed during Exercise Joint Warrior off the coast of Scotland.

Exercise Joint Warrior is taking place during April 13-29 in the waters off, skies above and soil of Scotland. More than a dozen Royal Navy (RN) warships and submarines are committed to the annual war game. British warships are joined by more than 30 visiting warships, 40 fixed-wing aircraft and 30 helicopters.

Alongside RN, RAF and Army personnel taking part in Joint Warrior, forces from the Netherlands, Canada, France, Denmark, Belgium, Norway, Poland, Sweden and German are involved – nearly 12,000 military personnel in all.
Embarked onboard HMS Illustrious are Royal Marines from 42 Commando, Seakings from 845 Naval Air Squadron (NAS), a Merlin from 820 NAS, Chinooks from 27 Squadron RAF and Lynx helicopters from 659 Squadron Army Air Corps.

The scenario will cover a broad range of circumstances including evolving crisis and conflict situations which cover disputed territory, conventional and non-conventional maritime and amphibious threats such as counter-piracy and terrorist activity. The scenarios will develop over two weeks, increasing in tension and uncertainty into stimulated operations and potential state on state hostilities.

Royal Navy Type 45 destroyer HMS Diamond pictured during Exercise Joint Warrior near Scotland.

As warships and aircraft from across the Royal Navy begin a huge maritime exercise off the coast of Scotland, HMS Diamond has been gearing up for her role with a series of training drills.

The Portsmouth-based Type 45 destroyer has been putting her sailors to the test as she sails to meet the rest of the Task Force near Cape Wrath for a Combined Amphibious Landing Forces Exercise later this week.
HMS Diamond, which is affiliated to the cities of Aberdeen and Coventry, is to provide the air defence role for the exercise which will see Royal Marines storm the remote area by landing from the sea and air under the cover of warship firepower.
The Marines will be going ashore from HMS Illustrious and Bulwark to carry out their assault on land, explained Principal Warfare Officer (Above Water), Lieutenant Ben Martin. As well as keeping an eye on the airspace, we will attack enemy positions on land by providing naval gunfire support from our 4.5 gun as they arrive on the ground.
To prepare for this role, the warship has been taking part in a number of smaller scale exercises including practising firing at a moving target.
For this, JTEPS release a remote controlled dummy craft that acts as a small fast boat or Fast Inshore Attack Craft – for all the ships in the task group to fire on.
The aim is to disperse the craft – if we hit it then it is a bonus, explained Midshipman Annabel Broad. It is really about working with other nations – we all get a feel for how the other operates and it helps makes relations stronger for when we work together in the future.
As well as conducting the larger scale gunnery and air defence exercises, HMS Diamonds ships company regularly practise their firefighting and damage control routines to make sure they are fully prepared for all eventualities.
All the exercises are as real as possible with smoke machines used to severely limit visibility and personnel given strict time limits.

Type 45 destroyer HMS Duncan sails into Portsmouth for the first time.

HMS Duncan, the sixth and final of the UK’s sophisticated, new class of Type 45 destroyers, has been formally handed over to the Royal Navy by shipbuilder BAE Systems, the MOD announced today.

The 7,500 tonne vessel, armed with the world-leading Sea Viper missile defence system, sailed to her new home in Portsmouth where she will undergo a series of trials and tests before being declared suitable for operations next year.

Her arrival at the Naval Base marks the end of a successful 12 year build programme to provide the Royal Navy with a fleet of the largest and most powerful air defence destroyers it has ever received.

Type 45 destroyer HMS Dauntless cuts through rough weather in the South Atlantic during her deployment to the area.

HMS Dauntless, the second of the T45 Destroyers, joined the Fleet in November 2010, shortly after being the first of class to fire the new Sea Viper missile. Since then she has proved her capability helping to ‘protect’ the USS Carrier Battle Group in Exercise Saxon Warrior as the American units approached the UK in May.

Reversing the tables she then crossed ‘the pond’ in company with the Russian Destroyer Admiral Chabanenko to take part in FRUKUS 2011 – the letters come from France, Russia, UK and US who make up the annual exercise.

While in the US she took the opportunity to find the warmest waters easily reachable without having to go through Suez to test the resilience of the T45 systems in hotter water.
HMS Diamond with Sea King Helicopter

Defence Images posted a photo:

A Sea King Mark 7 Airbourne Surveillance And Control (SKASAC) helicopter from 854 Naval Air Squadron takes off from the deck of a Type 45 destroyer for the first time.

Able to provide surveillance and early airborne warning, the Sea King Mark 7 can conduct maritime security operations while deployed on a maritime unit in the Arabian Gulf. It was in company with Portsmouth-based Type 45 destroyer HMS Diamond, which is currently in the region.

The SKASACs are presently exercising with Royal Navy ships in the area. For the last few years units from the squadron have been deployed to Afghanistan, where their performance in providing airborne support to units on Op HERRICK has been of critical importance. Using the techniques honed from these deployments they are bolstering surveillance at sea by demonstrating their ability to detect even small contacts at range and report them to friendly units.

The exercises were carried out while Diamond was conducting maritime security operations in the Gulf Region. It was also a good experience for the aviation team in the ship to handle the requirements of a different class of aircraft.

Royal Navy Type 45 destroyer HMS Diamond (foreground) is pictured with HMS Melbourne during joint operations in the Middle East.

HMS Diamond is the third of Britain's fleet of six Type 45 destroyers. Launched on the Clyde by our sponsor, Lady Johns, in November 2007, the ship arrived in Portsmouth in the autumn of 2010 and was commissioned in the spring of 2011. She deployed in June 2012 on her maiden deployment.

HMAS Melbourne (FFG 05) is an Adelaide class guided-missile frigate of the Royal Australian Navy. Originally ordered as HMAS Torrens, the ship was renamed during construction, and entered service in 1992.
