Methoni Bourtzi

James G Photography posted a photo:

Methoni castle is 13th Century castle in the small village of Methoni, in the south west Peloponnesse, Greece.

I had this picture in mind before I even arrived at Methoni. Being part Greek and having a lot of family who live there I know the area very well. I did want a sunset shot, but with it being so late and the castle closing early I couldn't manage one. I was pushing my luck being there to take this shot.

I visited in the evening with the sun starting to drop, knowing that it would at least start to create some shadows in the ground and on the bourtzi itself. The sun being so high all day it can prove difficult.

I shot towards the bourtzi which has been used both as a prison and a fort. I spent a lot of time trying different compositions but decided one from the hump in the bridge looking down the path centre on with the fort centre on, one side lit the other in shadow worked best. I think the rough vs calm sea on either side of the picture gives it a little depth. The Island of Sapienza is behind.

I headed here early evening, wary of the gates getting locked up and shot this from the Bourtzi overlooking the main castle itself. To the left of the picture is the Ionian Sea which stretches all the way to Italy and to the right is Methoni village itself with the much calmer water of the bay.

Methoni is a small village at far the south of the western peninsula in the Peloponnesse. At the southern tip of the town is a large castle dating back to the 13th century. Surrounded three sides by sea and the fourth with a large moat.

Taken at dawn just before the sun came up giving some great suble pastel shades. This was taken from the man made rock jetty looking over towards the castle, mainly the bourtzi.

My last sunrise in Methoni from a bit further away from the castle. Because the beach isn't rocky there wasn't much in the way of foreground interest all along the bay, so settled for some seaweed instead waiting for the light to hit the castle perfectly lighting it up.

This was taken from the man made rock jetty looking over towards the castle, mainly the bourtzi with the island of Sapienza in the distance.
Methoni Castle Sunset Portrait

A variation on my previous uploads, this time including the sun just before it went below the horizon. Methoni is a village that lies at the very south of the west peninsula on the Peloponnese. It has a large castle at the end of the village with a large moat around part of it and see around the rest. While most people go for sunset a bit higher up on the ground you can see to the right of this photo I was determined for a different angle and went down into the moat to some rock pools with the sea which you can see beyond, you may just be able to make some figures out in the distance watching the set. I was fortunate enough for no wind for the water in front to provide some lovely reflections.
