Visible towards the left of the picture is the Coştila Peak transmitter which we passed on the first day's walking and the Caraiman Peak Cross can just be made out.

Originally constructed in the 14th Century, the castle was used to defend the key pass between Transylvania and Wallachia against Ottoman invaders and later as a customs post.

Although now marketed as Dracula's Castle because of its Transylvanian location, the castle has no connection with either Stoker's book or Vlad Ţepeş.

In 1920 the Castle became a royal residence and a favourite retreat for Queen Marie (wife of Ferdinand I and instrumental in ordering the construction of the Heroes' Cross on Caraiman Peak), later inherited by her daughter Princess Ileana until the forced abdication of the royal family in 1948.

This room was Queen Marie's bedroom.
