Barack Obama: Drone Ranger

Madison Guy posted a photo:

This model of the Reaper drone (earlier versions were called the Predator) was displayed by protesters at the Farmers' Market last year, where it projected a lethal sense of menace.

The drone program pretty much violates all the values Barack Obama originally campaigned for, and many of us were disappointed that he expanded the program in his first term instead of bringing it under control. There wasn't much point in harping on it during the last campaign, because no candidates had a better position. It seemed as if he considered the program something that gave him political cover and served as a sop to the military as he sought to bring two wars to an end. Even so, it seemed ill-advised that he reportedly took personal responsibility for signing off on drone strikes. But I hoped once he was safely reelected he would take active steps to wind down the program.

So far, there's no sign of that happening. The appointment of John Brennan to head the CIA seems to suggest a policy of business as usual. Bill Moyers added his voice to the anti-drone chorus with a Huffington Post piece titled Barack Obama: Drone Ranger. Moyers hopes that Brennan's confirmation hearing will provide a chance for critics to take on the drone issue, and it seems that's going to happen -- Jay Carney's press briefing today was dominatd by reporters' questions about the DOJ's white paper on drones that, among other things, justifies the killing of certain US citizens without due process. It's a chilling read:

"Were the target of a lethal operation a U.S. citizen who may have rights under the Due Process Clause and the Fourth Amendment, that individual's citizenship would not immunize him from a lethal operation."

This is setting a terrible precedent as a matter of national policy. Targeting U.S. citizens without due process is arguably unconstitutional. Drone attacks in other countries with whom we are not at war violate most interpretations of international law, especially with targeting as indiscriminate as it seems to be in actuality, if not theory.

Worst of all, it sets the stage for a future arms race involving drones, domestically and internationally. The technology is becoming cheaper, smaller and more powerful. Even today, hobbyists are flying personal drones that can carry DSLR cameras. The payload could just as well be an explosive charge. Our skies will soon be filled with drones -- and they won't all necessarily be friendly.

These Harley Workers Weren't Fooled by Walker's "Divide and Conquer" Strategy

Madison Guy posted a photo:

I took this photo in February of last year, not long after Scott Walker dropped his budget bomb. It never was about the money. It was about attacking unions, as Walker made clear in his now infamous "divide and conquer" remark to Beloit billionaire campaign donor Diane Hendricks. Walker was following a long-standing GOP pattern.

Rich corporate interests have used a divide and conquer strategy to pit natural allies against each other for years. Attacking unionized public employees has always been a favorite strategy, and certainly worked well for Reagan when he broke the air traffic controllers union, PATCO.

Like Tom Barrett, who talked at the time about Walker's "divide and conquer" strategy, these Harley workers knew what Walker was doing and called him on it early on. It seems like poetic justice that the Walker-Hendricks clip emerges now in the last stages of the recall campaign, because it's just that pattern of deceit on the part of Scott Walker that led to the recall in the first place. The difference is that a year ago, only a few people knew. Now everybody knows.

Women voters helped the Democratic candidates outpoll Scott Walker yesterday, and they'll be a major factor in the June 5 recall election. The GOP's war on women has resulted in a major gender gap, both in Wisconsin and in the nation as a whole. It's a big problem for Mitt Romney, and also for Scott Walker. He should be nervous, but maybe he's been too busy networking with rich GOP donors in other states to even notice.
Equal pay for women is just one of the many women's rights under attack in the war on women. In Wisconsin Scott Walker and his cronies gave another gift to their business supporters by passing legislation repealing Wisconsin's Equal Pay Enforcement Act. Recalling Scott Walker won't end the war on women, but it's a start, and it will send a message that can't be ignored.

"Screw Us and We Multiply" -- Early Days of the Wisconsin Uprising

Madison Guy posted a video:

Playing with the Vine micro-video app, using some photos from what's ancient history these days -- but what a history!

As for Vine, it's either the buggiest software ever -- an early, not ready for primetime pre-beta release -- or there's something wrong with my phone or or it doesn't work very well with my relatively slow DSL or I'm doing something wrong or all of the above. Or maybe they took off so fast their servers are totally overwhelmed. Only sometimes saves to my camera roll, and even less often successfully uploads to Vine and Twitter. Worse, if the save/upload doesn't work, your six seconds of precious video is gone forever -- a pretty powerful kind of negative reinforcement.

It's a promising app with a lot of potential, but I'll probably wait for some upgrades before doing anything else with it. Life is too short to shoot videos that seem to have a 50% or better chance of disappearing. Even if they are only 6 seconds long.

I hope Vine gets their act together. If not, somebody will come along with something like it with a better implementation.

Madison lost a gentle young man who had many friends in his neighborhood and the Madison music community. He died needlessly before his time, and nothing will bring him back. The best thing we can do to remember him is to make sure nothing like this allowed to happen again in our community.
