Holi dog

i saw plenty of dogs in a bad way in Nepal, but many were very well cared for. they were present at every tea house where we lodged on the Annapurna Circuit, often in a community shared-ownership capacity. while primarily serving as guard dogs, they were still gentle and well-mannered.

during our 3 weeks of trekking, several dogs roaming the trails of the circuit seemed to temporarily adopt the four of us, appearing out of the trees, pacing alongside us for a time, waiting for us to catch up, then suddenly disappearing into the forest for its next adventure. the "trail dogs" we ran into like this were universally sweet-tempered, and clearly very intelligent animals.

this puppy was decorated by his family for Holi (pronounced "holly", a Hindu festival of color) in Pokhara. for one day, brightly pigmented powder and water balloons filled with colored paints are cast on friends, family, and passersby.

i found it unexpected and incredibly dear to see people decorating their pets this way. in Tadopani, we saw a grandfather, mom, and 3 small kids playing ball with a white dog who had been covered in pink and purple polka dots, colors clearly selected by one of the little girls. unless he was a purple dog covered in white polka dots...which wouldn't have surprised me at all.

women prepare an offering inside the Swayambhunath temple in Nepal. i know very little of this faith tradition, but our guide explained that for Buddhists, making an offering of food is a means to release selfishness and open one's heart to the needs of those less fortunate. i could see little downside to more people having a tangible manner to allow those things to happen.

in this town, which on this day held the record for the hottest documented temperature in the world, a group of children stood in line for health screenings. many had never seen a doctor in their lives and were quite unnerved. the older kids went first and offered comfort to the younger as they waited.

in an impossibly long line, everyone with their largest containers, waiting for their turn to access a pipe which was painfully slow in its dripping of water. non-potable, of course, but the only available source during the dry season for this heavily populated section of kathmandu. the queues run for hours in these areas, with some reports of a daily demand at 320 million liters, and a supply of only 70 million liters in the dry season.

puppies and kids...always a good combo, the world over.

this pile of cuteness was stationed at the top of the seemingly unending and insanely steep stone staircase that climbed the hillside on the way to Ghandruk. i heard them long before i could see them, their giggles and puppy yips echoing off the rocks. this still makes me smile, all these months later.

the streets of Kathmandu are a frenetic compilation of tourists, motos, animals, flowers, natives, cars, food, police, puddles, sewage, and heat. i had to do an embarrassing amount of dashing, ducking, and chasing to get this shot. but i had seen them from a block away and knew the shot i wanted. i was thankful the surrounding chaos is invisible, leaving only the togetherness that caught my eye. to me, this was the essence of this city...closeness in chaos. people touch each other instead of mobile devices. lovely.

i have found that if you move with purpose and confidence, even when you're doing something nutty (walking into traffic) people will very often allow you the right of way. don't be sheepish with the camera in the streets. be respectful, but be bold. it works out.

a woman leans in a near perpetual stoop, making sure this area of the Boudhanath temple was pristine. no small task, given the dust, winds, and thousands of pilgrims and tourists that circumnavigate the structure every day. she was not paid to do this. it was not her job, but her calling.

...as it is sometimes called. properly, it is Swayambhunath, a large religious complex in the heart of Kathmandu. it is a holy place for Buddhists and Hindus alike, and the innumerable monkeys that inhabit this place are considered holy as well. this little fellow was snacking on an offering left along the 365 steps that rise to the peak of the eastern side of the temple grounds.

it was very early morning, we had just started the day's journey. we rounded a bend and were faced with such beautiful countryside. field after field after field, full of tea and corn and rice, perfectly tucked into the mountain side.

they were the only two people in sight for miles. they were absolutely lovely and stopped me in my tracks. she was singing to him, completely in love. i was shooting straight into the sun, horrid lighting, but i couldn't not try to capture this. i miss this place.
