365/365 – i believe i can fly

WE DID IT!! Can you believe it?! 365 days. Holy guacamole.

There is no way on God’s green earth I could have finished this project without you. If I started to name names, we’d be here all night – and I’d still forget to mention someone. You know who you are. I try to tell you as often as I can, how grateful I am for your friendship and support. I mean it. Every time. Thank you, from the center of my being.

I set out to accomplish three goals.

1. Get over hating to see myself in pictures. I’m over it.

2. Become a better photographer. Before 365, I’d never really taken pictures, other than recording a holiday. I am astounded by how much I’ve learned.

3. Be creative. This third goal pushed me most. I believe I learned so much because I tried so hard every day to do something different.

Over a year ago, like so many others, I lost my job. So, a month in to my 365, on a whim, I took a class to become certified to substitute teach. (I have a college degree, but not in Education.) I had no idea if I’d get any work, or if I’d like teaching.

When I walked in to a first grade classroom for the first time late last year, it felt like I was home. I really like that school that gave me my first shot, and I love those kids. Luckily, as the year unfolded, that school gave me more and more substitute jobs. I just wrapped up a long term substitute assignment with them this week. Leaving those kids after two weeks of being together, and completing my 365 at the same time, has left me crying more than you can know.

So what’s next? I plan to spend more time enjoying YOUR pictures and not fretting so much about my own. So many of you are in the middle of your own 365’s, and I hope to help you get to the finish line, as you’ve helped me. That’s all I know for certain.

And guess what? That school where I substitute? They gave me MY VERY OWN summer school class. I’ll teach reading and writing. My FAVORITE subjects! Can you believe it?!

It’s true.
