These woodpeckers are uncommon, wary and big, with a body length of 16 to 19 inches (40 to 49 cm) and a wingspan of 26 to 30 inches (66 to 75 cm). The chickadees keep their distance! Textures by Distressed Jewell and Delany Dean.

This mother Wood Duck and her babies were grabbing a quick snooze on shore after busily paddling around in the reeds and cattails. I had many pictures of Mom with her eyes open, but I thought this was the more unusual one. She only had her eyes closed for a second.

No, this is not about a hamburger! The Mackinac Bridge, opened on November 1, 1957, connects the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan and at 26,372 feet in length, is the longest suspension bridge in the western hemisphere. People who live in the Upper Peninsula, or U.P., are known as “Yoopers”. The Yoopers refer to the people who live in the Lower Peninsula as “Trolls”, because they live “beneath” the bridge! There is a running race across the bridge on Memorial Day weekend, and a walk across the bridge on Labor Day weekend. Both of which can be quite interesting if it’s a windy day! One of the most popular celebrations on Mackinac Island is the ten-day-long Lilac Festival, held every June since 1949. Events include a horse-drawn parade, crowning of the Lilac Queen, a 10K running race, dancing in the streets, afternoon tea at the Grand Hotel, hayrides, jazz and wine nights, etc. All of this in the shade of tree-size lilacs foaming with blooms. Mackinac Island is an island and resort area covering 3.8 square miles in Lake Huron, between Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas. Motorized vehicles have been prohibited on the island since 1898 and travel on the island is either by foot, bicycle, or horse-drawn carriage. There are teams of horses everywhere as they transport all the supplies that arrive from the mainland for delivery to the hotels, restaurants and homes. The entire island is listed as a National Historic Landmark and is well known for its famous Victorian Grand Hotel, Lilac Festival and fudge! My husband and I were married on the island and we go back every few years because it’s so romantic . . . well, okay, it’s really because of the fudge! The Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Michigan

Opened in 1887, the Grand Hotel has 385 rooms and a 660 foot long front porch, the largest in the world. One ton of bulbs are planted on the hotel grounds in the fall, including 25,000 tulips and 15,000 daffodils, and more than 125,000 bedding plants (annuals) are used to create the many gardens. In 1895, Mark Twain lectured in the Grand Hotel Casino with an admission cost of $1. Also, the 1980 film, "Somewhere in Time", starring Christopher Reeve, Jane Seymour and Christopher Plummer, was filmed on location at Grand Hotel. The movie now has a huge following, with a fan club that meets at Grand Hotel each October. While more than one million people visit Mackinac Island each year, there are only 600 year-round residents, and with motor vehicles prohibited, more than 500 horses transport people and supplies around the island.
