Thomas Nast is the father of modern American political caricature. He earned his renown working for Harper's Weekly between 1859 and 1886 drawing cartoons about corruption in New York and the Civil War. He created the version of Santa Claus we think of today.

The source for this image of Thomas Nast is a photograph by Mathew Brady that is in the public domain and available via Wikimedia. The background is from adapted from a photo in the Brady-Handy Collection availble from the Library of Congress.
