For the Ladies

National Library of Ireland on The Commons posted a photo:

Supplying the 1930s fashion needs of women in the South East, I give you the Ladies' Department at Hickey's in New Ross.

Hickey's obviously had A.H. Poole photographers in because of a huge sale they were having. I found an advert in the Kilkenny People from 11 July 1936 for:
Special 'Bus Service for Hickey's
First Great Annual
SUMMER SALE
To New Ross - Saturday, July 18th and Saturday, August 1st

This was followed by a load of locations/times, and then this rather curious line: This 'Bus will travel by Old Time and will stop on signal at any point.

What was Old Time?

Date: Wednesday, 1 July 1936

Very exciting this morning, Flickroonies - we're venturing onto English soil!

This is an early O'Dea photograph from 1936, allegedly taken in Swedford, England. On a very cursory search, Swedford certainly wasn't leaping off the Google page, but we knew that Mr O'Dea took photos around Guildford...

Choosing photos for this stream is an interesting process, but whenever a photo makes me laugh that more or less clinches a slot, and that's what happened when I came across this one. Hope you like it too...

So, presenting the pupils at Good Counsel College (definitely) in New Ross, Co. Wexford (we thought). And we now know we were right about New Ross, thanks to eyelightfilms who found this on the Good Counsel College website:
"From 1890 until 1980 the old Good Counsel College stood in the heart of New Ross. It was a small boarding school which catered for students from all parts of Ireland."
"I recognise one of the boys as the late Charles Muldoon from Tiernascragh in Co.Galway. He is the boy with glasses standing with his left shoulder against the downpipe. He was about 18 years old at the time and went on to be ordained an Augustinian priest in Rome during W.W.2. He later served in Australia, Limerick and Galway before retiring from San Francisco around 1985. Had a reputation for being a fine bridge player. He was very proud of his poker school in New Ross which by all accounts was quite profitable. He was even prouder of getting wind of a crackdown by the authorities and selling the deck of cards just days before they were confiscated. There is a possibility that some of these boys are still alive and might be able to put names to the happy faces. Surely one of the finest school photos I have ever seen."

This photo marks a red letter day for our National Library of Ireland Flickr Commons stream. It is the final photo in our Year in the Life project, where we uploaded one photo every day that was taken on that date (day & month) somewhere in Ireland (although we do have one stray that was taken on the Eastern Seaboard of the United States, we think). And the added value for doing this in 2011/2012 was that this was a Leap Year, so we managed to squeeze in an extra photo for 29 February...

So definitely time for virtual drum rolls, and resounding bualadh bos (applause) for everyone who has worked away over the last 12 months to help us find out more about the people and places in our/your photographic collections!

This is men hard at work at J.F. O'Gorman's Motor Works in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary.
Not a very picturesque view, but instead Poster Heaven and a great example of NLI collections colliding!

This is Manor Street school in Waterford photographed on the day after a fire. Next door is the Cumann na nGaedheal Committee Rooms, and hence there's a great array of 1932 election posters on the wall, some of which we have in our Ephemera Collections.

To get up close and personal with the posters, have a look at them on our other Flickr photostream: We Have Peace; The Roll of Dishonour; A "Hot" Record; Shadow of the Gunman.

Incidentally, there's mention of Dr. Vincent White on posters advertising Cumann na nGaedheal election meetings at Ballytruckle and Alphonsus Road. Dr White was the husband of Mrs E. White who ordered this photo from Saturday, 2 February 1924.

Oh, and this photo was commissioned by Charles S. Quinlan, who was a Waterford solicitor, perhaps acting on behalf of the Christian Brothers.

Irish Hospital Sweepstakes parade through Dublin in late March 1935. Before every draw of winning tickets, there was a parade through the city, with all of the tickets carried in the boxes you can see in this photo...

Initially, couldn't work out what street this is! However, the inimitable Gerry Ward galloped to the rescue, so we now know this photo was taken on Middle Abbey Street, Dublin.

Lucky Coady's, the main (and allegedly luckiest) shop for buying Sweepstakes tickets was at 39 Dame Street. This, however, is "McCarthy late of Coady's". Oh, and the black cat on the shop sign is Big Tom, the Sweepstakes mascot.

If you're interested in knowing more about the Irish Hospital Sweepstakes, this review by Turtle Bunbury of Dr. Marie Coleman's 2009 book, The Irish Sweep is really good.

Some of the first telephone boxes to grace Dublin's streets. Installation was in preparation for the thousands of people who descended on the capital from all over Ireland, and from all over the world, for the 31st International Eucharistic Congress in June 1932.

Would love to hear from anyone with more information on telephone boxes in Ireland. According to the excellent Come Here To Me! blog, Dublin's first telephone kiosk appeared in May 1925.

Thanks very much to woodworker_34 who worked out that these boxes were being installed outside the old Ballast House on O'Connell Bridge. You can actually see them in this 1932 British Pathé newsreel footage: A Million People Kneel in Prayer, at 2:00 to 2:03 mark.

We've previously uploaded two photos of H. Downes & Co, Waterford. That establishment is still up and running and are here on Flickr as Downes Bar. They're keen to see more pics of Downes from back in the day, so hoping the rest of you won't mind if we revisit 10 Thomas Street...

So this is the cellar at H. Downes with staff working away. The barrels, one of which is being tapped(?), were filled with Choice Old Port, Fined, 12 August 1936. Not entirely sure what process fining was, but I'm sure some of you know. We haven't an exact date for this photo, but it must have been taken at the same time as the other two on 27 October and 31 October, 1936 respectively. Most of you are aware of how easily led I am, so if enough of you vote for one date or the other, I'm game to go out on a limb and go with that date...

Think that the woman in the background has a plaster on her thumb. Love that such tiny details are evident in our photos! And does that mean that Elastoplast style sticking plasters were around in 1936?

National Library of Ireland on The Commons posted a photo:

Lovely shot of Christmas festivities at Waterford's Sailors' Rest. Particularly like the British Sailors' Society banner adorned by a dove with a twig in its mouth (as in the Noah's Ark story). And wondering if the Christmas crackers on the tables were Tom Smith's brand...

We didn't have a location for this Sailors' Rest that we first featured back on 17 July, although we knew this photo was ordered by a Mr Craig, until ofarrl commented:
"This was more than likely number 9 Henrietta Street, Waterford which was the address of the David Beatty Sailors Rest."
