Penny Farthing

Not sure if we've seen St. Stephen's Green in Dublin from this angle before. There isn't the usual clarity of a Lawrence Collection photograph, but when I spotted the Penny Farthing, this one was irresistible.

Date: Circa 1890?? (definitely between September 1880 and January 1900)

Found a typo in the title of this one! It reads: Steep street with Countynstables to centre of town with green land etc near sea. However, still think that Countynstables would have made a good name for a county's police force...

Very bustling scene at College Green in Dublin (at 13:16 o' the clock?). There are surely clues in this streetscape that can help us narrow down the date...

Apologies for late posting this morning!

Today's photo was our 9th "unknown location" Fergus O'Connor photograph. Until today, 7 had been located. Had a feeling that this one, taken between 1900 and 1920, would be despatched with relative ease, but was super impressed with martindevlin who solved this mystery with impressive speed - it's now Garda Headquarters in the Phoenix Park, Dublin!

Now, our record for "unknown location" Fergus O'Connor photos is 8 out of 9 solved. HOWEVER, it'd be great to get a date for this one too...
These two young entrepreneurs had set out their "stall" in front of St. Catherine's Church on Thomas Street in Dublin. Said this morning that it would make an old library very happy if these girls could be identified, and we've done it! These give car and bicycle (motorbike?) registration numbers for the whole of Ireland and owner names and addresses. If any of you have a bit of time on your hands, feel free to seek out our photos with cars where the reg numbers are clearly visible, let me know about them, and I'll happily check the Directory to see if we can Name That Driver (or at least owner)!

Carlow, late 19th century" />

This photo was taken in the late 19th century, probably by Robert French, chief photographer of William Lawrence Photographic Studios of Dublin. It features a laughing, or at least smiling, policeman!

Compare this view of Bagenalstown with its companion photo taken by photographer Padraig J. Laffan (approximately 100 years later) as part of the Lawrence Photographic Project 1990/1991, where one thousand photographs from the Lawrence Collection in the National Library of Ireland were replicated a hundred years later by a team of volunteer photographers, thereby creating a record of the changing face of the selected locations all over Ireland.
Sandymount Castle, Dublin." />

You'd all thwarted my previous attempts at providing a difficult challenge from our "unknown location" Fergus O'Connor Collection images, nonchalantly despatching some of them in as little as 30 minutes. Well not this one, Flickroonies! I had threatened to eat the original glass plate negative if this one was solved quickly, but as it took us 10 months, don't think I have to make good on that offer.

All we had on this one was "Large house, with a clock tower and crenellated rooftop, in an unknown location", and the clock told us it was taken around 11:45. Though the time didn't help much, the clock tower certainly did. Almost 10 months to the day from its original posting, zetetic2006 said:

"I recognised it immediately! It's Sandymount Castle on Sandymount Green in Dublin, the crenellated clock-tower is a giveaway. The rear of the castle backs onto the southern side of the Green where you can still see the clock tower, check out Google Maps. The view in this photo is no more, Castle Park was built in these grounds, sometime in the 50's or 60's I think."

Some of the first telephone boxes to grace Dublin's streets. Installation was in preparation for the thousands of people who descended on the capital from all over Ireland, and from all over the world, for the 31st International Eucharistic Congress in June 1932.

Would love to hear from anyone with more information on telephone boxes in Ireland. According to the excellent Come Here To Me! blog, Dublin's first telephone kiosk appeared in May 1925.

Thanks very much to woodworker_34 who worked out that these boxes were being installed outside the old Ballast House on O'Connell Bridge. You can actually see them in this 1932 British Pathé newsreel footage: A Million People Kneel in Prayer, at 2:00 to 2:03 mark.

This photo was taken probably by Robert French, chief photographer of William Lawrence Photographic Studios of Dublin.

We've seen the front of St. Nicholas' Church before with the Egg and Fowl Market and the back view in one of our O'Dea photographs from 1964...

You can compare this view of St. Nicholas' Church with its companion photo taken approximately 100 years later as part of the Lawrence Photographic Project 1990/1991, where one thousand photographs from the Lawrence Collection in the National Library of Ireland were replicated a hundred years later by a team of volunteer photographers, thereby creating a record of the changing face of the selected locations all over Ireland.
