Thrilled to spot this mobile cutler! Either he's Mr Burns or he worked for Burns, Cutler.

Didn't know where this was, and in fact, thought it might be somewhere in Co. Down, but derangedlemur identified it in record time as Dundalk Courthouse.

We have Herald Office at no. 6
Next door was Bernard Dooley with Post Cars for Hire
P. McCabe, Bootmaker next door
Then a Fancy Emporium
Followed by Reilly, Hair Dresser with a Billiard Room upstairs

The lure of the sea called to me again when I saw these gorgeous ships. But for those of you tired of maritime magnificence, there are some great businesses to be seen here too and the railway viaduct in the distance.

At no. 3, we have Kennedy the Grocer and the Railway Hotel; no. 4 is Anne Butterly, also a Grocer; no. 5 is a Coal Store; no. 6 is Edward Fitzgerald's, complete with a man working on the roof...

Can only make out one name on the ships - think the nearest one is called Kyne? (But would be grateful if you'd all squint at it to see what you think it is)

This is the Williamsons, setting off for a picnic. This photo was probably taken somewhere in the Louth area, and it looks as if it must have been a grand day out for all concerned.
Really detailed family information in from jennigal923 who says:
"William Tempest's wife Jane Emily Backhouse, had a sister Alice Gertrude Backhouse. She married Hewston Maxwell Williamson.
Sandbagged

National Library of Ireland on The Commons posted a photo:

A little unseasonal to be adding a beach scene in October, but this is a nice shot from our Tempest Collection (all photos taken around Co. Louth). Our metadata for this photo tells us that it is "A mother and her son Trevor, filling a bag with sand on a beach".

It's a shame that we don't have the mother's name, yet...

However, rafferr contributed the following really useful information: "This photograph is of the photographer's mother and brother. The boy is called Trevor Tempest and his father (William Tempest) was originally from Rostrevor in Co Down (probably called Trevor after Rostrevor) and relocated to Dundalk sometime in the late 1800's. The photographer is called Harry (Henry) Tempest (brother of Trevor) and the photograph was probably taken at Blackrock Co. Louth in the early 1900's or some time before. The Tempest family were a well known family in Dundalk."

Thanks to Jennigal923 for giving us more detail on this mother and son. They were Jane Emily Tempest, née Backhouse, aged about 46. The boy is Trevor Tempest, but he was christened William Caxton Tempest, and would have been aged about 5 in this photo. And Jennigal923 also unearthed great information on this little boy who grew up to swap his sailor suit for the uniform of a Lieutenant in WWI. By that time, William Tempest Senior was a J.P. or Justice of the Peace.

Also interesting that they'd be in a lot of trouble nowadays for taking sand from a beach! Wonder what they wanted it for?

Sandbagged

Procession through the streets of Dundalk, Co. Louth to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the Men's and Women's Sodalities (established 1881) of St. Patrick's Church, Dundalk.

On 7 September 1931, the Irish Independent reported that the crowds of over 6,000:
"... gave an indication of the growth of the movement and the deep religious feeling permeating the life of Dundalk ... This Mission resulted in an addition of 2,000 new members, who, with 4,000 old members, marching in procession through the town, made a demonstration that will not soon be forgotten by the thousands who witnessed it. Trains, buses, motors, and horse-drawn vehicles brought large contingents from all parts, with the result that the streets were crowded to congestion."
