Prize for first person who got why I called this one Barney and Beany (wholly imaginary and virtual prize, but prestigious nonetheless) goes to swordscookie! See first comment below...

These two young entrepreneurs had set out their "stall" in front of St. Catherine's Church on Thomas Street in Dublin. Said this morning that it would make an old library very happy if these girls could be identified, and we've done it! Thanks to the sister of one of them, we now know these are Elizabeth or Lily Collins on the left, and her friend Angela Arnold on the right...

PLUS THIS JUST IN! I found four small but priceless volumes of the Irish Motor Directory and Motorists' Annual for 1907; 1912-13; 1914-15; 1915-16 in the bowels of Library Towers. These give car and bicycle (motorbike?) registration numbers for the whole of Ireland and owner names and addresses. If any of you have a bit of time on your hands, feel free to seek out our photos with cars where the reg numbers are clearly visible, let me know about them, and I'll happily check the Directory to see if we can Name That Driver (or at least owner)!

Two girls feeding a goat that has been chained up to graze on the banks of the Grand Canal at Mespil Road in Dublin (between Baggot Street and Leeson Street Bridges). Surely a sight that you would not see today.

This is Mr James Cunningham of 13 Morley Terrace, Waterford with his family.

Fairly sure that I found mention of the Cunninghams a while back in the 1911 census online. If any of you have a moment, it'd be a great help if you could check that for us. (Hoping there won't be any sad news about the Cunninghams, as with large families like this at that time, there's often the sad recording of the fact that some of their children died.)

Thanks to swordscookie who went off and did some online census legwork for us:
"The 1911 Census shows James aged 35, Katie, 34 (Born in Kildare 1877ish) Mai 4, Joseph 3 and Kathleen 1 as the family in the house. In addition Mary Osrant 20 and Bridie Osrant 13 are listed as household servants."

So we now know this is James Cunningham, and his wife, Katie. Also assuming "going down in stairs", that the oldest girl here is Mai (approx. 10/11); Joseph (approx. 9/10); and the raggedy tomboy is Kathleen (approx. 7/8)...

A little blurry, but who could keep this many children still? These are girls at the Sisters of Charity School in Waterford having an early Christmas Party. Incidentally, this is a rare example of a Coca-Cola style Santa Claus in our early photos.

Meanwhile, the older girls were playing netball outside, some still wearing party hats too.

A young nun walking Holy Communion girls past no. 3, Halston Street, Dublin on the feast of Corpus Christi. Interesting juxtaposition with the older mini-skirted local girls. The baskets were usually filled with flower petals for the girls to scatter along the way...

Cuteness alert!

These are the three children of a Mrs Murdoch from Kilcoran Lodge, Cahir, Co. Tipperary. No particular reason for choosing this photo other than that their cuteness score is off the charts, and the oldest girl has really compelling eyes. Love the little brother's nonchalant leaning on his big sister too.

Thanks are due to sterling work from Niall McAuley especially, and from John Spooner for investigating the later history of the Murdoch family. Niall identified Adeline Murdoch, aged 4-ish (left) and Sidney Murdoch, aged 3-ish (right). The older girl in the middle remains somewhat elusive...
