Today we have the battle of the horse-drawn tram versus omnibus photos. It's Cork (the real capital of Ireland?) versus Dublin (the real capital of Ireland!).

Which is the best image? That might be a little subjective, so perhaps which can we find out the most about?

Hoped this would strike one of you as familiar immediately, but the streetscape and church tower were not ringing bells for me (if you'll pardon the pun). Tin of beans solved the mystery in jig time - this is Main Street, Blackrock.

Sadly, very few of the business names are clear enough to make out...

Lovely cart either picking up or delivering goods from John McGauran, Grocer of 31 & 32 Westland Row. And we have sidecar no. B58 or no. 858?

... as it says in our catalogue, or graffiti as we'd call it! We were fairly happy this was somewhere near Rostrevor, Co. Down (and thanks to Tin of beans for confirming that), but found it irresistible either way for the relatively classy adornment, including really neat carving.

Someone (perhaps WC, LC, BC, MLC or FAC) has helpfully added XXIII Sept 1867, so we know this must have been taken between then and 1883...

A bit of an odd one for you today. Any hope of finding out where this well was? Probably not a Holy Well, despite the religious lines and biblical reference? Perhaps in the grounds of a private house?

Some images before this one in the series of Stereo Pairs are from Co. Down, but no geographical information on this or the following one...

Thrilled to spot this mobile cutler! Either he's Mr Burns or he worked for Burns, Cutler.

Didn't know where this was, and in fact, thought it might be somewhere in Co. Down, but derangedlemur identified it in record time as Dundalk Courthouse.

Then a Fancy Emporium

Bizarre construction altogether that can be seen here too. Did the plinth operate as a market stall?

We had no idea where this was, so many thanks to Leonard Bentley for identifying it as being beside St. Mary's Church, Athenry, Co. Galway!

Three men posing around a dead seal - not much mystery here as to who the suspects are!

Thought that this was taken at one of the Seal Caves at Doogort on Achill Island, Co. Mayo, but it's great to have confirmation (thank you derangedlemur).

Knew there was no way we couldn't date this - how often did the London Clown Cricketers come to the Munster Hall and Mardyke Cricket Ground? (At the very least thought there'd be newspaper reports of mothers locking up their daughters!)

Thanks to DannyM8 for pointing out Ger Siggins' excellent account of the Clown Cricketers at Lansdowne Road in Dublin (from Lansdowne Road: the stadium, the matches, the greatest days) and to John Spooner for his newspaper searching. It looks as if the Clown Cricketers played Cork on Monday 24th and Tuesday 25th August 1874. So, I hereby declare this one August 1874!

This is almost certainly where our Dandies from Friday were headed, or headed home from (bad grammar, but you know what I mean) - a race meeting at Punchestown - very distinctive stands in the background.

Can anyone identify the regiment from the soldiers' uniforms?

Gentlemen at the Black Church Hotel in Kildare. We're fairly sure they were heading to or from a race meeting at Punchestown (see Very Grand Stands and Roulette Wheel?)...

I'm tagging for Dandy, because if that isn't what that chap (complete with furled umbrella and nonchalant lean) is, then I'll eat the nearest stovepipe hat!

Plus, is that a Landau anyone? Thinking it's time we learnt to tell our Landaus from our Broughams...

This is from our Stereoscopic Collection, which was bought over by William Lawrence in Dublin, and then came to us. The photographers involved were James Simonton and Frederick Holland Mares.

It looks as if one or other of them was in Drogheda around the same time as Lawrence's chief photographer Robert French...

This snowy and icy scene from Rathgar in Dublin was also requested by Niall McAuley as he thinks he used to play around this area as a child.

Wondered if perhaps we'd be able to date this photo pretty accurately through accounts of harsh wintry weather between 1860 and 1883, and from the comments below, it looks relatively convincing that this snowy scene may have been captured circa January 1881.

Was delighted to see Rathgar Sawmills really clearly on the buildings in the background...

Well, the title in our catalogue more or less accurately described this one, but where was it? Thanks to the aptly named derangedlemur, we now know this was the Court House in Sligo Town.

The "pub" of the title is Taylor's Cabinet Makers, Upholsterers & Undertakers...
