This photograph was irresistible because of the Holy Grail of not just one but two news posters that are for once (Huzzah!) legible.

I've uploaded a detail of the two posters for clarity. I'm getting Friday May [??], but if that combination of headlines doesn't help date this one, then I'm giving up and running away to join a circus or maybe even The London Clown Cricketers!

We've seen shots of Nelson's Pillar before, but usually in the distance or in a state of chassis following its blowing up in March 1966, so I was delighted to find this fine view of it in our Eason Collection.

This photo also gives us a joyous assortment of trams - the no. 8 to Dalkey; the no. 29 to Fairview; the no. 20 to Rialto Bridge; and I think the no. 3 to Westland Row and Ringsend; and a car with reg. no. IK 9729.

There's also an infuriatingly obscured news poster which seems to be screaming about "Startling Evidence"!

Though shaking metaphorical fist at the driver of the Nugent's bus, his mate, and the dogs for obscuring the number plate on the bus...

This photo was originally uploaded well over a year ago, but unbelievably has never attracted any comments! Hoping that by "recycling" it today, we can find out more about it...

P.S. This photo has been chosen as his favourite NLI Flickr Commons photo by swordscookie, and he's written and sent in a paragraph about it by Flickr Mail which will appear on our NLI Blog. This is for our celebration of the 5th anniversary of the Flickr Commons next Wednesday 16th.

Had never spotted an engine with a tram before in any of our photos (had there been a breakdown?), so thought you might be interested in this one. We thought it may have been taken near Terenure College in Dublin, and we weren't too far out. Thanks to Niall McAuley for "finding" this location on Templeogue Road in Dublin...

Was intrigued to see First and Third Class on the side of the tram too!

Locomotive maker is T. Green & Son Ltd., Leeds & London, Makers 1906, No. 367...

Maybe not so much mystery about this one, but I thought ye might like it anyway what with the potato peeling (is that called spud-bashing?) and the big slab of meat (going to be cooked on the fire in the back?).

This is one of a series of Eason photos of a military encampment at Ballykinlar in Co. Down. We don't know if this was a repeated seasonal camp or a one-off.

We don't know exactly when this photo was taken, though it was sometime between 1900 and 1940. Presumably closer to 1900 from the "uniforms" though they seem to be a motley mix of styles and eras too... Anything to do with the Ulster Volunteers, do we think?

Grey Man's Path

Complete change of pace today from urban environments. This is the Grey Man's Path at Fair Head, Ballycastle, Co. Antrim and that's a dog with nerves of steel...

Would welcome a location for this one, and any information on the rock formation - factual, mythical, outright speculation...

P.S. If any of you have a little time on your hands when you're finished with this one, you might like to help us out by revisiting this W.D. Hogan shot, uploaded on this day last July. We're not as happy about our Hogan dates as we used to be, because you all helped blow some of them out of the water (if you'll pardon the military pun)...

Hadn't meant this image from our Eason Collection as any kind of mystery photo - just liked it for the shops and thought we might get a date from the posters. It was allegedly Westland Row in Dublin, but there is no church spire that looks like that visible from Westland Row. Was wondering if it mightn't be up more towards Harcourt Street, and that turned out to be the case -see comments below...

And this shot of George's Street, which also started life in our Munsterset is taken just a little further back so that you can make out a bank at no. 115 on the left, and Bennis & Sons at no. 30 on the right... And I think the photo was taken at 14:45.

Cranking up the old Flickr machine after my holliers, and thought that to make up for my absence, we'd have a street corner double whammy today! So, here's the corner of North Frederick Street and Hardwicke Street in Dublin.

Unsure of date, but must have been after 1905, as there are Irish Independent news posters outside Field's. See comments below for dating investigating, and for some lovely information on the ladies who owned Field's...

Lots of men chatting around the bridge here, but the boy in the foreground is fully occupied either delivering those parcels, or he has been sent to collect them. Think that's the River Clanrye flowing under the bridge...

Here's the current and relatively unchanged Street View, thanks to mogey.

The monument noted above by beachcomberaustralia is for Isaac Corry, 1753-1813, M.P. and Irish Chancellor of the Exchequer (who was born and died on the same day, 15th May). See comment below for a riot in Newry provoked by Corry's Window Tax...
