Very atmospheric photo altogether taken by Elinor Wiltshire at Dublin's Marshalsea Barracks.

Because of Little Dorrit, Marshalsea conjures up the idea of a debtors' prison for me. Is that what it originally was, does anyone know, even if it was an ex-Barracks by the time this was taken in 1969?

Date: 1969
Potatoes should be dug without delay

National Library of Ireland on The Commons posted a photo:

Good dating (and social history) in the posters outside this R.I.C. Barracks at Brookeborough in Co. Fermanagh.

A Department of Agriculture poster warns about Potato Blight and that "potatoes should be dug without delay". Can't read the last 3 lines (it's like an eye test), but it starts:
"Every Day the Crop now remains
in the ground ???
? the tubers turning "black"...

A little poster seems to be offering a £1 Reward for a Bull Calf (and while we're talking about animals, there's a spaniel? relaxing on the windowsill).

A poster between two of the constables is advertising militia training. Think the poster on the right is also for militia training and it looks as if Royal Innis... is the start of Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers? May be able to date this poster by S.G. Roe who signed the proclamation. Also God Save The King plus E.R. at the top means Edward VII was in power, so this one is definitely 1901-1910.
Portobello Barracks, Dublin

National Library of Ireland on The Commons posted a photo:

This reminded me of the poem "Naming of Parts" by Henry Reed. Hope ye like it…

Incidentally, had a look at the two "walls" to the left of the photo from a different angle in another shot (if you'll pardon the pun). They have slots to fire through, and the one on the left is painted like a brick wall, while the one on the right seems to be painted with branches and leaves, etc.

I'd urge any of you with military/armaments knowledge to go mad with the tags!

P.S. Any of you who remember the Thimble Castle in Galway? Comment in from great grandson/daughter of owner of Mullins shop - ready and eager for any questions you might have...
Mitchelstown Eviction

National Library of Ireland on The Commons posted a photo:

Feeling some performance anxiety because this photo is very special - it's our 1,000th photo on Flickr Commons! However, it's also special in that it's a quite rare (we think) capture of an eviction in a town. Most that we have are in rural settings. We thought this may have been taken in September 1887 around the time of the "Mitchelstown Massacre", but as always, research here was a great help in establishing a more likely date of June 1887...

The Plan of Campaign was an attempt to gain lower rents through collective bargaining, because prices for agricultural exports had fallen dramatically in the 1880s.

Date: Circa June 1887
You can compare this view of Enniskillen with its companion photo taken approximately 100 years earlier as part of the Lawrence Photographic Project 1990/1991, where one thousand photographs from the Lawrence Collection in the National Library of Ireland were replicated a hundred years later by a team of volunteer photographers, thereby creating a record of the changing face of the selected locations all over Ireland.

For further information on the Lawrence Photographic Project, read all about it on our NLI Blog.

Apologies for late posting this morning!

Today's photo was our 9th "unknown location" Fergus O'Connor photograph. Until today, 7 had been located. Had a feeling that this one, taken between 1900 and 1920, would be despatched with relative ease, but was super impressed with martindevlin who solved this mystery with impressive speed - it's now Garda Headquarters in the Phoenix Park, Dublin!

Now, our record for "unknown location" Fergus O'Connor photos is 8 out of 9 solved. HOWEVER, it'd be great to get a date for this one too...
Irish Guards' Mascot - Leitrim Boy

National Library of Ireland on The Commons posted a photo:

A very young member of the Irish Guards, pictured at Waterford Barracks with the regiment's mascot, an Irish Wolfhound.

I thought that the dog must have moved, because on zooming in, there seemed to be a ghostly leg, and some obvious remedial work on his tail. James Guerin explained this effect:
"I think the 'ghost' is the original position of the dog's tail and maybe this was too 'between it's legs' for the owner. Seems a bit bizarre to edit it but maybe this was a 2nd version and the owner ended up going for the original print as the edit was too obvious. "

Believe it or not, we now have a name for this dog. He was Leitrim Boy, out of Galtee Boy and Carlow Nora. Leitrim Boy was born on Tuesday, 12 November 1907, and so would have been 9
years old when this photo was taken (or 63 in dog years!). Thanks to Niall McAuley for providing us with this great link to Irish Guards' mascots down through the centuries, including our lovely Leitrim Boy.

As was pointed out below by a few people, the Irish Guards were on the Western Front in 1917, but as ofarrl said:
"I think the most likely explanation for the presence of the Irish Guards, or at least the band members, in Waterford would have been for the purposes of recruitment, they did a similar tour of Ireland in April 1915."

Thanks to ofarrl (see comments below), we now have a lot more information about this photo. The crash happened in November 1920 as a "Scout" plane, carrying despatches from Fermoy to Waterford Barracks and manned by flying officers Briggs and McKiehan, crashed into the roofs of two houses opposite the Barracks. The house on the left was Mr Aspel's licensed premises, and the one on the right was privately owned by a Mrs McSweeney.
