Captain and First Mate of The Hansa

Another mystery shipwreck for you! Apparently these two salty old sea dogs were captain and first mate on the Hansa. We have a few Poole photos from around November 1900 of the wreck of the Hansa, although none of them look particularly wrecked - probably more a case of running aground? Think it might have taken place off Tramore, Co. Waterford.

Answers on a postcard as usual please, if you have any information!

Supplying the 1930s fashion needs of women in the South East, I give you the Ladies' Department at Hickey's in New Ross.

Hickey's obviously had A.H. Poole photographers in because of a huge sale they were having. I found an advert in the Kilkenny People from 11 July 1936 for:
Special 'Bus Service for Hickey's
First Great Annual
SUMMER SALE
To New Ross - Saturday, July 18th and Saturday, August 1st

This was followed by a load of locations/times, and then this rather curious line: This 'Bus will travel by Old Time and will stop on signal at any point.

What was Old Time?
Date: Wednesday, 1 July 1936

We had some tentative information on this one, not all of which we could stand over in a court of law...

We believed these are Mr and Mrs Philip B. Pierce. This is their Rolls-Royce. The photo may have been taken on 5 June 1946 at Park House somewhere in the South East of Ireland. Park House had extensive grounds including the tower we can see, and perhaps a lake too...

Thanks to mogey and ccferrie for telling us that this is Park House, Ballyboggan in Wexford!

National Library of Ireland on The Commons posted a photo:

There's a bit of a mystery to this Poole Collection photograph. It was allegedly taken in Butlerstown Castle in Waterford (circa 1904, I think). There are three photos all taken at the same time. It was ordered by a Mr Wilcock, who may have been the butler. Do these gentlemen look like staff?

I'm not convinced Butlerstown Castle was sizeable enough to support a staff of this size, or indeed was grand enough to have such portraits. They remind me more of somewhere like the picture gallery in Kilkenny Castle. Anyway, that's my tuppence worth. What do you all think?

Date: Circa 1904?

John Spooner, of this parish, suggested "In commemoration of Ireland's first track cycling medal since 1896, (a silver won by Martyn Irvine two weeks ago in Minsk, followed an hour later by a gold) how about a picture with some bicycles..."
Presenting therefore the South Eastern Wheelers from Waterford Bicycle Club! Think that this photo was ordered by a Mr Keane, perhaps of Henrietta Street, Waterford.
As to the silverware, from what I can make out of the wording:
Squat one on the ground (middle) = The "Tyler" Challenge Cup, 1909
Tall one on the ground (right) = South Eastern Wheelers

This is a terribly grand group at a ceremony at City Hall in Waterford. We now know that the "Lord Lieutenant and Lady Aberdeen visited Waterford yesterday for the purpose of presenting the Fagan Shield (the gift of Sir John Fagan) to the St. Dominick Industrial School, conducted by the Good Shepherd Nuns ... At the City Hall, an address from the Corporation to Lady Aberdeen was read..."

We've visited this room before, on Monday, 20 August 1928 for a "civic welcome" to a Fr. Walsh. From the newspaper report below, it looks as if this was taken at Waterford City Hall.

Thanks to ofarrl, we're already ahead of the posse on this photo. We know that that the tremendously titled Sergeant-at-Mace, John Harrison, is in this photo. John was unearthed by his great great grand niece (think that's right), Mrslulu1 in this 1903 photo, alongside millionaire industrialist and library philanthropist Andrew Carnegie...

National Library of Ireland on The Commons posted a photo:

Celebrating the haul of trophies won by W.B.C. Senior Four, as we thought they were. However, swordscookie doubts that they were Seniors:
"If these guys won a Maiden Fours trophy then they were not a Senior four as listed. It was possible to row above your grade at that time in the more provincial regattas, if there was no entry for the senior levels then a crew could go "pot-hunting" and gather a senior trophy against little or no opposition. However they were then forever locked into the senior grade and could no longer row "Maiden or Junior"! The big trophy in the centre rear with the seven names is most certainly not a fours trophy but this four could have been part of an eight who won it."

The gentleman seated on the left is Austin Farrell, 1872-1934, great uncle of Brendan J. Grogan. Promised Brendan that I'd upload this, and we're hoping that others in the photo can be identified. Certainly the chap seated on the right looks like an older version of the chap also seated on the right (again with Austin Farrell) in this photo from 18 May 1906.

Just love this one! Everything seems so glossy and shiny - the horses' coats, their hooves - even the windows are gleaming.

Very smartly turned out in their riding gear are these two young ladies at Grace Dieu Lodge, Clogheen, Co. Waterford. We had this photograph titled as the Misses Anderson, but from all the research below, it looks as if there was only one Miss Anderson connected with Grace Dieu Lodge at this time - Miss Susan Alice Anderson (1881-1941), who would have been about 26 when this photo was taken.

This Poole Studio portrait is of an E.F. Frazer (which we now know, thanks to your research - we thought it was Fraser). Almost certainly taken in Waterford, and we believed the young man may have had something to do with Roscommon. We'd said we'd love to know more about him, and now we do...
Read the comments below for more about Edward, his military career and family.
