The Arch of Victory in Alfredton (Ballarat) begins the The Avenue of Honour, which is the earliest known memorial avenue to have been planted in Victoria, and appears to have stimulated similar plantings throughout Victoria in the years 1917 to 1921. The Avenue is a commemoration of soldiers in response to the First World War. The Arch of Victory was officially opened by the Prince of Wales on June 3rd (third anniversary of first tree planting), and cost a total of £2,105, with funds raised by girls employed by E Lucas and Co. This was always a landmark for me as a girl when we travelled through Ballarat (long before the ringroad was built).

Dunnstown is located on the flats below Mount Warrenheip about 12kms east of Ballarat. It was predominately settled by Irish in the 1850s. In its heyday Dunnstown boasted sawmills, a thriving township and a distillery and is named after Irish distillery owner, R. Dunn. Barley was grown for the distillery but when it closed production stopped. The Irish being Irish turned to what they knew best, potatoes. This is last remaining pub in Dunnstown - Shamrock Hotel.
