This is the ruin of Carey’s Mansion at Carisbrook Castle, Isle of Wight. The castle itself became the holiday home of Princess Beatrice, youngest daughter of Queen Victoria.

Carey's Mansion was built in 1584-6 by George Carey. He was queen Elizabeth I's cousin and built the mansion to provide himeself with grander accommodation, befitting his status as Captain of the Isle of Wight. It has 13 rooms and was as grand as many country houses built at this time.

This is the bald eagle, taken at the falconry centre at Appuldurcombe House, Isle of Wight.

The bald eagle is the national bird of the USA.

The Bald Eagle is an opportunistic feeder which subsists mainly on fish, which it swoops down and snatches from the water with its talons. It builds the largest nest of any North American bird and the largest tree nests ever recorded for any animal species, up to 4 meters (13 ft) deep, 2.5 meters (8.2 ft) wide, and one metric ton (1.1 tons) in weight.

Bald Eagles are not actually bald; the name derives from an older meaning of "white headed". The adult is mainly brown with a white head and tail. The sexes are identical in plumage, but females are larger than males. The beak is large and hooked. The plumage of the immature is brown.

The lifeboat station at Bembridge, Isle of Wight gives a lovely midline focal point.

I just loved the texture of the foreground, with the rocks, small pools and the green seaweed over the rocks closer to the shoreline.

Knowle Mill, better known today as Bembridge Windmill, is a Grade I listed, preserved tower mill at Bembridge, Isle of Wight, England.

And a bit of history (Wikipedia)..............
Bembridge Mill was built c. 1700. It was painted by Turner in 1795. The mill was working by wind until 1915, having only been used for grinding animal feed after 1897. The mill was restored in 1935 and again in 1959, the latter restoration being funded by public subscription. In 1962 the mill was taken over by the National Trust. It has been restored and is open to the public.

My holiday on the Isle of Wight was based at Bembridge. My first night gave me the opportunity of capturing this dramatic image over the lifeboat station.

It had been a beautiful sunny day and I wasn't expecting so much colour in this position as I was facing more north than west. This shows just how far the glow from the sunset can stretch.

I have been away for the last week to the Isle of Wight and the New Forest, UK.

This shot was taken at Hatchet Pond, Hampshire showing the afterglow of the sunset behind the trees on the perimeter of the pond.

I was happy to find some colour in the sky as my previous visits to this location proved unsucessful with no colour and overcast conditions.

Having not got out recently with my camera, due to bad weather and various commitments, I thought it was about time I posted another image.

This is one taken a few weeks ago at the small fishing lake at the Mill on The Soar, Leicestershire.

This was taken slightly earlier than my previous shot and the pastel colours were reflected nicely on the calm(ish) water.

I stopped off on my way home from work yesterday evening, at the small fishing lake by the Mill on the Soar.

There was a short time of colour as the sun set but it only lasted a few minutes.

Looking through my archives for some inspiration, I came across this image which bought back some wonderful memories of a lovely day spent with two of my children at Watermead Country Park, Leicestershire.

It was a clear day with no wind and plenty of sunshine.

It's been a cold, drab, grey day here in the Midlands of the UK.

I decided to take the camera out to Bradgate Park, Leicestershire and see what I could capture - I didn't expect to get very much so I wasn't disappointed.

This is one of the small cascades along the stream running through the park.

As I was getting ready for work this morning I glanced out of the kitchen window and saw the most wonderful colours in the sky, so rushed upstairs and got my camera out, headed into the back bedroom, opened the window and snapped a couple of quick shots.

This is a 1/50 second exposure and no filters were used.

This is the last in the series of the shots taken at Cropston Reservoir at the weekend. This was taken several minutes after the sun had set.

46 second exposure using B&W 6 stop filter with a 2 stop ND grad filter over the lighter water.

My little 3 year old Grandson came with me to Cropston Reservoir yesterday afternoon with his Daddy. I let him use my compact camera that I carry most of the time. He had great fun taking shots of his feet and the sun poking through the trees - a bit over exposed but he enjoyed it.

When I was going through the shots he had taken, to make him a disc to take home, I came across this one that he took. I was surprised at the clarity and everything about it. I think we have a budding photographer in the family.

I think I know what he will be getting for his birthday in a couple of months time!!

This is another image from my shoot at Cropston Reservoir yesterday afternoon. Taken slightly later than the last post when the sun had gone completely below the horizon.

20 second exposure using B&W 6 stop filter and a 2 stop ND grad filter reversed over the lighter water.

I finally managed to get out with my camera again this evening. We had a lovely cold but sunny day with some nice cloud formations and blue skies. I set out to Cropston Reservoir in time to catch the sunset and hoping that it would provide the expected show. I was a little disappointed that the cloud became a bit heavier.

This shot was taken just as the sun was setting. Using a B+W 6 stop filter with a 2 stop reversed filter, over the lighter water.

Looks Like Winter

We finished work early today due to the adverse weather conditions.

After I got home - which took twice as long as usual - I needed to run an errand, so off I went taking my compact Nikon with me and snapped one of the small "greens" on our housing estate.

I just missed a number of children on a sledge but other than that, the snow was almost virgin and fresh.

I stopped off at a layby on the way to work this morning. It was a cold frosty morning and there was a little colour in the sky. I only had my small compact Nikon in my bag, but I couldn't resist taking a few shots of the wonderfully frosty trees.

This just picks up some of the colour that was around of the wintry sunrise.
