Looking at the Shanghai skyline beyond the Customs House - The Pudong District.

Pundits once mocked Shanghai's Pudong district, a purpose-built version of Manhattan, as over designed and under occupied, evidence in steel and glass of a property bubble of historic proportions.

Deng Xiaoping sparked the transformation of Pudong's riverfront of warehouses with a 1990 utterance: "Shanghai is our trump card." A decade later, Pudong was Exhibit A for critics of an urban-development model guided by state planners, a soulless district where 70% of the buildings stood empty. Visiting economist Milton Friedman called it "a statist monument for a dead pharaoh on the level of the pyramids."

The district's transformation into a vibrant nexus for finance, trade and entertainment is testament to factors like the strong momentum of Chinese migration toward urban centers. Pudong was conceived as an international gateway—fronted by a world-class skyline—but its foundations today rest on domestic trends, including leaders' development plans and an expanding middle class.

Located in the center of Shanghai City south of Huaihai Zhong Lu, Shanghai Xin Tian Di has become an urban tourist attraction that holds the historical and cultural legacies of the city. Shanghai Xin Tian Di is a fashionable pedestrian street composed of Shikumen and modern architecture style.
Shanghai Xin Tian Di is unique because of its concept of construction. It retains the antique walls, tiles and exterior of the Shikumen housing of old Shanghai. On the other hand, its interior embodies a totally different world of international gallery, bars and cafes, boutiques or theme restaurants. When you walk into Xin Tian Di, you will get the taste both of Shanghai in the 1920's and the sonic modern lifestyle of urbanites of the 21st century.

Xin Tian Di is divided into two parts: the South Block and the North Block. The South Block mainly consists of modern architecture with Shikumen architecture as an accompaniment. Its North Block kept the old Shikumen architecture style, forming a contrast to the modern South Block.

Xingye Lu, the dividing line between two blocks, is the site of First Congress Hall of the Communist Party of China. The Shikumen buildings along two sides of the street have become the scenery embodying both the historical and artistic features of Shanghai.

Shanghai Xin Tian Di is where 'yesterday and tomorrow meet in Shanghai today'. It embodies the comfortable and convenient life of the 21st century, having all conveniences such as an automatic elevator, central air-conditioner and broadband network. Its boutique keeps in pace with international fashion. Also, the typical Shikumen buildings of old Shanghai seem to be telling people beautiful stories about the history and culture of the city.

Shanghai Xin Tian Di has become the best place for tourists to appreciate the history and modern life of the city, and is also a meeting place for local citizens and foreign visitors. Two kilometers away from Xin Tian Di, there is a place of the same kind, called Tianzifang, which is also a welcoming art street in Shanghai.

Lined with shops and architecture of the old it is a classic walk into the Old Town of Shanghai

The reconstructed Old Street is 825m in total length. It is separated into two sections by Guanyi Street. The eastern section extends to Renmin Road and the western section to Henan Road.
The buildings in the Old Street are differently, the eastern section still keeps the characteristics of the houses in the late Qing Dynasty (A.D.1840--1911) and the early Republican period (1912-1919).

The buildings in the western section are to model after the architecture style of Ming (A.D.1368-1644) and Qing (A.D.1616-1911) Dynasty, the lattice windows, the painted tablets make the street full of ancient atmosphere.

The Shanghai World Financial Center is a supertall skyscraper located in the Pudong district of Shanghai, China. It was designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox and developed by Mori Building. It is a mixed-use skyscraper, consisting of offices, hotels, conference rooms, observation decks, and ground-floor shopping malls. Park Hyatt Shanghai is the hotel component, containing 174 rooms and suites. Occupying the 79th to the 93rd floors, it is the second-highest hotel in the world, surpassing the Grand Hyatt Shanghai on the 53rd to 87th floors of the neighboring Jin Mao Tower.

On 14 September 2007, the skyscraper was topped out, at 492.0 meters (1,614.2 ft) making it the second-tallest building in the world and the tallest structure in the People's Republic of China at the time. It also had the highest occupied floor and the highest height to roof, two categories used to determine the title of "world’s tallest building". The SWFC will be exceeded in height by the nearby Shanghai Tower, which is due for completion in 2014.
The SWFC opened on 28 August 2008, with its observation deck opening two days later. This observation deck, currently the world's tallest, offers views from 474 m (1,555 ft) above ground level.

The SWFC has been lauded for its design, and in 2008 it was named by architects as the year's best completed skyscraper.
