"...divide the waters from the waters" (Genesis 1:6)

This Israeli soldier stands guard at the stairs leading down from Jerusalem's Old City's Jewish Quarter to the Western Wall behind him, where Jews congregate to pray. More than the rifle slung on his shoulder, the water bottle in his hand signifies the underlying battle for control over the geographical and cultural watershed on which he stands, between Mediterranean and the Arabian Sea. Above is the Muslim Quarter and the Dome of the Rock where Muslims are gathering for the Friday prayers. Israeli security forces increase their presence here every Friday afternoon in anticipation of clashes.
