just a quick note to say happy thanksgiving to the stateside flickr-kids!

i'm in maryland at the moment, which is perhaps just enough distance from my own world to afford perspective on all the things i am thankful for... it has really been a damn interesting couple of years, and i have been so very fortunate for the people in my life.

( well, the people and the dogs. )

while walking to the park for sandwiches and sunshine, someone stopped us on the street, and asked jet and olive to be on their dog blog. they ham briefly for pictures, bio, then we continue on. at odd times throughout the day, we say "dog blog," laughing at how it sounds.

it was raining in portland--really raining, in that "even rain gear won't help keep you dry" sort of way--obviously, the group got to thinking that it would be a nice day to go on a hike... so, figured we'd drive up the gorge, see what we could find.

we found a lot of rain there too.

comments: first roll of film through a new (to me) SLR!

a friend recently sold everything he owned, packed up and moved to hawaii... and somehow i ended up with a pretty well worn Canon F1. I'd always fancied playing around with one of these—love that removable prism—but still hadn't stumbled onto one at the right time.

First roll through looks good: meter, seals, winder all working well. It was nice to get to use the "newest" camera in collection with my "oldest" lens, the 55 f/1.2 aspherical that Dad passed to me in 1989!

As an aside, not sure I like it better than my trusty Canon A-1, but it sure is built like a tank!

a few weeks ago, we went to the coast gypsy-van style. it rained all night, heavily, on the steel roof.
the next morning we made oatmeal on the campstove, then flew kites on the beach.
it was a simple, lovely weekend.

as a child, i often dreamt of flying, and these dreams always initiated with speed: if i could just run fast enough before jumping, it was possible to jump great distances, even fly... so long as i was concentrating hard enough.

( i still believe that, honestly, but the dreams come less frequently these days. )

as jet bounds around me with a puppy-like glee i've not seen for years, i cannot help but to revel dizzily at how sea and sky have fused in this new world of ours. in this simple moment, anything is possible. "it's now or never," i think, turning hastily on my heel.

we both sprint down the beach: each stride slightly longer, slightly higher than the one before...

wow, have we loved our early morning walks in fog-locked portland this week... visibility has been as low as 15-20 feet some mornings, and the romance of simply disappearing into thin air has been—all too briefly—a plausible reality.

off leash, jet walks by my side as we work our way down sidewalks, but then floats away casually as we reach the park. years-long rapport provides the confidence to allow us to move independently, knowing that the other won't stray far whilst out of sight.

she listens to the world, i listen to headphones. i while away a track or two simply leaning against a tree, reluctantly check my watch, then set out in the direction she had sauntered. just out of sight, maybe 50 feet to the right i find her, simply sitting, sniffing the air.

she looks at me briefly, offering an abbreviated tail-wag of recognition, but does not move from her position.

i walk over, sit in the dew-wet grass, and whisper in her ear.

still trying to remember my way around the 'blad, I accidentally wind past the 8th frame.
for the ninth, jet acquiesces to my request: turns out manual focusing on a dog, backwards, is hard.

( this attempt just gives me all the more respect for manyfires. )

when i received this roll back from the lab, i pulled this image up at full resolution and sat staring at it for at least 15 minutes—the depth those large frames lend to a photograph is simply shocking.

this is where i learn to fall in love again.
