La Malagueta is an area mainly known for its of a sweep of bay in Málaga, but it also houses important buildings. La Alcazaba, a fortress which dates back to 1065 and is now an archaeological museum, was built by the Moors who occupied Málaga until the mid fifteenth century. It grew to become one of the foremost merchant centres in the entire Iberian Peninsula.

From the heights of the fortress, the whole city can be admired. The Puerto de Málaga, Jardines de Pedro Luis Alonso and Casa Consistorial de Málaga can be seen in the first picture in the comment box. The second one shows the lower half of La Alcazaba in the foreground, and the Catedral. The last image shows the Fundacíon Picasso, a building consisting of a group of flats, one of which was occupied by Picasso during the part of his life he spent in Málaga. It now conserves documents and bibliographies of the artist.

Next stop is Málaga, which lies on the Costa del Sol of the Mediterranean, a city of wide boulevards, swaying palm trees, lively nightlife, good museums and excellent seafood restaurants. Here shown is the Calle Larios, with its colorful decorations for the end of year celebrations. It is the recommended place to start exploring the city as it is surrounded by attractive small plazas and streets, within which was the place we stayed at, Hotel Petit Palace Plaza, as well as the Catedral, both shown in the comment box.
Virgin of the Lanterns

Going back to the Mezquita-Catedral de la Asunción de la Virgen (Mosque-Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary) at night, focusing on the Virgen de los Faroles, found on its exterior, as well as a Christmas tree decorated with Angels, which was right next to it.

In 1236, Córdoba was captured by King Ferdinand III of Castile in the Reconquista, and the mosque was turned back into a Christian church. Alfonso X oversaw the construction of the Villaviciosa Chapel and the Royal Chapel within the mosque. The kings who followed added further Christian features, such as King Henry II rebuilding the chapel in the 14th century. The minaret of the mosque was also converted to the bell tower of the cathedral. It was adorned with Santiago de Compostela’s captured cathedral bells.

The most significant alteration was the building of a Renaissance cathedral nave right in the middle of the expansive structure. The insertion was constructed by permission of Charles V, King of Castile and Aragon.
3. (Mezquita)-Catedral Bell Tower

(Mezquita)-Catedral Bell Tower" />

The Catholic transformation of the Mezquita-Catedral.

Mezquita-(Catedral) Mihrab" />

The Islamic part (or what remains of it!) of the Mezquita-Catedral.

The Cathedral and former Great Mosque of Córdoba, in ecclesiastical terms the Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, and known by the inhabitants of Córdoba as the Mezquita-Catedral, is today a World Heritage Site and the cathedral of the Diocese of Córdoba.

The site was originally a pagan temple, then a Visigothic Christian church, before the Umayyad Moors at first converted the building into a mosque and then built a new mosque on the site. After the Spanish Reconquista, it once again became a Roman Catholic church, with a plateresque cathedral later inserted into the centre of the large Moorish building. The Mezquita is regarded as the one of the most accomplished monuments of Islamic architecture.

It was described by the poet Muhammad Iqbal:
"Sacred for lovers of art, you are the glory of faith,
You have made Andalusia pure as a holy land!"
