The nave and tower are remnants of the Benedictine priory church, itself on the site of the pre-Conquest church. The present five bay aisled nave is late 12th and early 13th century, the tower built after 1453. The church quickly fell into serious decay after the dissolution of the priory in 1538, and the extensive restoration from the 1850s onward included a chancel and vestry 1886-7 and a north porch and rebuilt west front 1902-5. The church now has an exhibition for visitors on the monastic life of the priory.

Locke Park was opened in 1877 as an extension to the People's Park in Barnsley. The site was first developed in 1862 on land donated by the widow of the local engineer, Joseph Locke, and was laid out in several phases.

Joseph Locke was engineer of the Grand Junction Railway and is recognised as one of Barnsley's most prominent figures of the 19th century. His widow, Phoebe, donated the land in his memory in 1861. In the first phase of development, the lodge at the entrance was built by John Moxon and the walls were built by Mr Tattersall of Silkstone. The statue of Joseph Locke, designed by Baron Marochetti, was unveiled by Lord Alfred Paget on 18 January 1866. Further land was donated in 1874, and the extension was opened in 1877. This phase included the creation of Locke Park Tower, which was erected in memory of Phoebe Locke and opened to the public in 1877.

Tim Paul is of the native American Hesquiat people, descended from the Nuu-cha-nulth territory in Vancouver. Paul created Totem Pole at YSP over a period of ten weeks, using traditional tools and colours.

Totem poles are of special significance to west coast native Americans, being used as status symbols as well as to preserve and share native culture through the stories they share.

The Nuu-cha-nulth tell a story of a Canadian tribe who relied on fishing to survive, symbolised here by the face over the whale’s blowhole showing that human life is dependent on sea life. When a killer whale threatened fish stocks, the community prayed to the gods, calling upon the powerful Thunderbird. The Thunderbird picked up the whale by its tail and dropped it into the sea, where it became Killer Whale Mountain. As a token of thanks and remembrance, the Nuu-cha-nulth sit an eagle at the top of their totems.

York Guildhall was built in the 15th century. It served as a meeting place for the guilds of York. The city's guilds largely controlled the trade within York, they oversaw the quality of the workmanship within the city and looked after their members' interests

Because of damage sustained during an air raid in 1942, the present Guildhall is a rebuilt version of the 15th century building, and was opened by the Queen Elizabeth II in 1960.
The stone walls, however, escaped total destruction and form the frame of the reconstructed hall.

The Guildhall has served many purposes through its long history, and was the scene of many Royal visits. It was was the venue for Margaret Clitherow's trial, Richard III was entertained there in 1483 and Prince Albert, the Consort to Queen Victoria was a guest of honour at a Royal banquet.

Bretton Hall is a stately home in West Bretton, designed and built around 1720 by its owner, Sir William Wentworth, assisted by James Moyser.

In 1792 it passed into the Beaumont family, (latterly Barons and Viscounts Allendale) and the Library and Dining Room were remodelled by John Carr in 1793.

A new wing by Sir Jeffrey Wyattville was added in 1811-14, and monumental stables designed by George Basevi were built between 1842 and 1852. The hall and many other of its buildings and bridges are grade II 3 star listed structures

The hall is set in 500 acres of lakes and parkland which is also the home of Yorkshire Sculpture Park and a nature reserve. Bretton Country Park also houses sculptures and is the home of several endangered species.
