Blooming Sedum, Summer 2009

Over time the blooms of the phlox and Silene caroliniana fared due to a lack of natural rainwater. By the end of the fourth growing season, the blooming sedum has given the south wave an entirely new look.

North Wave

The north wave of ASLA's green roof has filled in quite extensively with only two growing seasons. The decking is made of Ipe (Ee-pay) wood, which was sustainably harvested in Brazil. Insect and rot resistant, it is one of the hardest woods in the world.

Spring on the South WAve

Pretty as a postcard: The colorful blooms of Silene caroliniana gave the south wave a burst of color at the beginning of spring. This photo was used as a postcard to invite Congressional staff members to the ASLA green roof for a presentation and tour.

Robust Growth

This photo shows the robust growth on the new staircase and north wave. The aluminum grating shown has sedum planted below. By doing so, ASLA was able to cover 90 percent of the roof with plants.

The black-eyed susans and thread-leaved tickseed were in full bloom on the north wave by late June 2007, the second growing season.

Sedum catwalk

Also known as the flame flower, the purple blooms on this sedum rise through the grates. ASLA was able to utilize 90 percent of the green roof by planting sedum below the grates.

South Wave Cactus

The Prickly Pear cactus in full bloom on the south wave. These bloomed shortly after the Silene caroliniana (below them) peaked.

The elevator shaft, the intensive portion of ASLA's green roof (which also includes the staircase), has 21 inches of soil. It's able to accommodate sumac trees along with the trumpet vine.
