Do-over

CD01 posted a photo:

As luck would have it, I broke the first decaled pane. I hate do-overs, but at least the second time goes a bit faster. I underestimated how fragile these panes are-the glass is .006 thick and it isn’t very friendly. So, I did a replacement decal and pane, and then added a few glaziers points made from thinned Mylar. A last burst of detail insanity for the year.

The decal method: I opened a picture of an old Lucky Strike window decal in Photoshop Elements and cropped and cleaned the image. I find that my printer makes more noticable dots on gradient images, so I used the paint bucket and brush to make each color solid (The final weathering will be done after application)

Since I was going to print on clear (Testors) decal film, I turned the white cigarette package a slight grey, and then I re-whitened the interior leaving just an outline of grey to print as a cutting guide (white areas will not print on clear paper). Then I flipped (reversed) the image for printing.

I imported the image into Word and sized it to fit the window pane. I made several copies and then printed them on the decal paper using the "best photo" setting on my Epson printer. I also turned off the "high speed" setting for the best image.

I cut out one of the decals and trimmed around the package shape. Then I gave it three coats of Dullcote spray to seal the ink, waiting 5 minutes between coats.

I applied the decal in the usual way to the backside of the glass pane and let it dry. I brushed thinned white gouache to fill in the clear interior of the package shape and let it dry. (An even solid coat is not required). Then I took a damp cosmetic sponge and dabbed at the back of the decal to vary the intensity. The nice thing about gouache is that it is infinitely workable.

CD01 posted a photo:

I finished the window for my ½” scale garage. I made the frames from O scale 1 X thick basswood and I filled them with panes of microscope cover glass secured with Squadron white putty. The upper pane was deliberately cracked, but the lower one cracked in handling. One pane has unpainted putty simulating a more “recent” repair, perhaps the reason for the security bars. The shade is spray painted tracing paper and the security bars are .02 x .06 styrene strips with Grandt Line rivet heads. After cutting and adding the rivets, the bars were first sprayed with Pactra flat black and allowed to dry overnight. Then I painted them with several water-thinned coats of Polly Scale green. After about 10 minutes dry time, I took a short stiff brush, dipped it in water and carefully brushed the piece until the paint softened and began to chip, exposing the flat black. Then I used gouache and weathering powders to add the fading, streaking, rust colors and bleed thru. The backs of the windows were dusted with fine powdery dirt. A few sawdust chip leaves were added to the sill as a final touch.
The Champion decal is from Microscale decals, and the closed sign was printed from a picture found on Flickr.

The size is 1.5” wide x 2.5” high.
