An early XVIII century manor built for the Rebelo de Andrade family after they bought the Our Lady of Egypt estate in Oeiras. The building was rehabilitated by the Department of Special Projects of the Oeiras municipality in 2005-2009, to serve as a cultural centre.

The Hardanger fjord seen from the Steinstøberg rest area. At the centre of the picture, the island of Kvam (Kvamsøy), notable for its weather station. It also claims to be smallest island in the world with its own church (built around 1280-1300).

The church at Bø by Torleiv Stadskleiv, painted in 1895, the year Egedius moved to Bø and they both painted and drew each other and for each other a lot. This one bears a dedication "to my friend H Egedius 95" on the lower left corner. In the collection of the Bergen Art Museum, Norway. For context see Red sox.

15-year old Halfdan Egedius discovered rural Telemark and its strong popular culture and traditions, so unlike big city Christiania (now Oslo) were he lived. He also met fellow painter Torleiv Stadskleiv (1865-1946), who was 11-year older and lived in the village of Bø. They developed a friendship like the world had not seen since Antiquity. The The Dreamer (1895) is a portrait of Stadskleiv by Egedius, painted the year he moved to Bø. It is in the collection of the National Museum of Art in Oslo. The right arm looks somewhat problematic, but the red socks tell their story to great effect. Egedius would die 3 years later, aged 21, after catching a rare bacteriological disease called actinomycosis. Stadskleiv never recovered from his sorrow and although he lived for almost 50 years after Egedius death, he painted very little.

The mother of all Christmas cards: Winter day by the Elbe (1853) by Johan Christian Dahl (1788-1857). The story it tells is not all bleak - the river may be frozen and the vegetation dead, but the little birds suggest that spring will eventually come and everything will be all right again. In the collection of the National Museum of Art, Oslo.

Doffen asleep (1878), portrait of Norwegian writer Gustav Adolph (Doffen) Dahl, by his friend Erik Werenskiold (1855-1938). Dahl died young and his production was thin and long forgotten, his memory lives on mostly through this portrait of the young bohemian artist that he was. In the collection of the Bergen Art Museum.

The Bethesda Terrace in Central Park teeming with people on a warm summer day. It's for nights like tonight (in the middle of the winter, -4 degrees C, light snow falling) that such pictures are taken.

Foot hygiene was practically an obsession among the lower classes in rural England in the early part of the 19th century (things may have changed since then, I know). In The Glade (1839), John Linnell (1792-1882) offers a nearly photographic account of what he saw, drawn from memory I'm sure. In the collection of the Yale Art Gallery, New Haven.

The Yale Art Gallery has a superb collection of italian pre-renaissance art, including two amazing portraits by Taddeo di Bartolo (ca 1362-ca 1422). This is Saint Jerome, who had a big following among the ladies of the Roman aristocracy. He would have made a great American televangelist or failed presidential candidate. Tempera on panel painted around 1390.
