Wet or Fine - Milford Sound - New Zealand

A boat cruise at Sterling Falls in Milford Sound - Piopiotahi in Māori - a fjord in the south west of New Zealand's South Island, within Fiordland National Park.
Waterfalls cascading from sheer rock faces rising 1,200 metres or more from the sea, lush rain forests clinging precariously to the cliffs.

Milford Sound is by far the best known of all of the fiords and the only one that can be accessed by road. It is approximately 16km from the head of the fiord to the open sea.
With 182 days of rain every year, Milford Sound is one of the wettest places in New Zealand with a mean annual rainfall of 6813mm.
However the rain creates stunning treats for visitors with dozens of temporary waterfalls created both at Milford Sound and along the Milford Road.

Return of a guided tour on the Franz Josef Glacier - Ka Roimata o Hinehukatere in Māori - a 12 km long glacier located in Westland Tai Poutini National Park on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island.

It’s a challenging walk, that offers superb views of the glacier, the surrounding mountains, and the Tasman Sea, by a clear day.

This is The early Maori knew Franz Joseph as Ka Roimata o Hine Hukatere (Tears of the Avalanche Girl). Legend tells of a girl losing her lover who fell from the local peaks, and her flood of tears freezing into the glacier.
It’s the world’s fastest moving glacier – moving at speeds of up to one meter per day. Franz Josef Glacier is located only 300 meters above sea level and is surrounded near its base by temperate rainforest.

The glacier was still advancing until 2008, but since then it has entered a very rapid phase of retreat. As is the case for most other New Zealand glaciers which are mainly found on the eastern side of the southern alps, the shrinking process is attributed to global warming.

Kea - New Zealand's smart and playful bird

Kea parrot, Nestor notabilis, in flight, Fiordland, South Island, New Zealand

Kea - Nestor notabilis - is found only in the South Island of New Zealand, most of them living on the western side of the Southern Alps, and is the only Alpine parrot in the world!.

The kea is an extraordinary parrot that makes its home in snow-clad mountains – a parrot habitat that is unique.

Kea are known for their intelligence and curiosity, both vital to their survival in a harsh mountain environment.

Kea can solve logical puzzles, such as pushing and pulling things in a certain order to get to food, and will work together to achieve a certain objective.

kea is a smart and playful bird, he enjoy playing, everything arousing their interest is examined very closely and romping around in the snow is one of their favourites while they move with clownish clumsiness and communicate using all kinds of sounds.
Their best-known call, which also gave them their name, is a squawking "keeaah" while flying.

Punakaiki pancake rocks - New Zealand

View of a column of water shoot skyward from rocks that resemble giant stacks of pancakes - Pancake Rocks, Punakaiki, Dolomite Point, South Island, New Zealand.

At the Pancake Rocks and Blowholes at Punakaiki, horizontal sheets of limestone and mudstone have been chiseled by rain and sea into curious stacks, ridges and chasms.

In many places, deep inside the cliffs, narrow vertical air shafts created by the rain met with horizontal tunnels created by the pounding ocean.

At high tide, or in rough weather, the ocean swells rush headlong through ever-narrowing tunnels and force large amounts of water and compressed air to race upward through the vertical shafts.

The Red Deer - Cervus elaphus - is one of the largest deer species.
Red deer were brought to New Zealand by European settlers in the 1850's and 1860's, along with seven other species of deer: Wapiti, Sika, Sambar, Rusa, Fallow, White-tail, and Axis. Today, red deer is the most widespread species, existing in the wild and on farms on both the North and South Islands.

Wharariki Beach and the Archway Islands - New Zealand

Wharariki Beach and the Archway Islands are situated just west of Cape Farewell, the northernmost extremity of the South Island, New Zealand.
This is the most spectacular coast in the region. Giant stone remnants that have stood the test of time.
These islands have borne the effects of both wind and water, and have been sculpted in interesting shapes.

View of Pelorus Sound, the largest of the sounds which make up the Marlborough Sounds, from Queen Charlotte Drive the main road in the Sounds - South Island, New Zealand.

The Marlborough Sounds are renowned for their scenic blend of bush-clad hills and tranquil bays.
They are an extensive network of sea-drowned valleys created by a combination of land subsidence and rising sea levels at the north of the South Island of New Zealand.
According to Māori mythology, the sounds are the prows of the sunken waka - canoe - of Aoraki.

Te Werahi Beach - New Zealand

View of Te Werahi Beach, Cape Maria van Diemen and Motuopao Island at the end of the Aupouri Peninsula, near Cape Reinga, the northwesternmost tip of New Zealand's North Island.
At the right, you can see a well formed track that follows the West Coast around rocky bluffs from the Cape Reinga lighthouse to Te Werahi Beach, which form part of the famous Cape Reinga Coastal Walkway.
But Te Werahi Beach is actually a 3 kilometre long stretch of sandy beach which takes nearly an hour to walk... the view giving the illusion of a small curving bay!
