Madagascar - Fianarantsoa-Côte Est railway (FCE)

The Fianarantsoa-Côte Est - usually called FCE - railway is a colonial-built railway in southeast Madagascar that connects the high plateau city of Fianarantsoa to the port-city of Manakara.
It is 163 kilometers long and was built by the French between 1926 and 1936.
A trip done hopefully within 10 hours with a break in each of the 17 stations where multiple vendors are rushing to the windows or ride in wagons.
The train connects the villages, sometimes isolated by more than one hundred km from any road or track, much like a lifeline between them and the outside world and is greeted as a savior at every stop.
An unforgettable day and an adventure!
An unforgettable day and an adventure to live intensely!

Baobabs are usually solitary trees, standing tall and proud in the midst of empty spaces. Yet in Baobab Alley, they cluster together forming an avenue of columns that border the dirty road.
It is located between Morondava and Belon'i Tsiribihina in the Menabe region in western Madagascar.
Along the Avenue are about a dozen trees 30 meters in height, of the species Adansonia grandidieri, endemic to Madagascar.
Baobab trees, up to 800 years old, known locally as renala - Malagasy : mother of the forest - are a legacy of the dense tropical forests that once thrived on Madagascar.

Photo of a Furcifer balteatus (male) or Rainforest Chameleon, a species of chameleon who lives in the East forest of Madagascar.

Chameleons males are distinguished from females by their larger size, their bright colors and the presence of rostra fine stranded or rigid in extension of the muzzle.
It is a common misconception that chameleons of any kind can change colour to match any colour they are up against. All chameleons have a natural colour range with which they are born and is dictated by their species. Colour change is, for the most part, subconscious. It is affected by temperature, mood, and light.

Humpack whale vs Air Madagascar

In Southern winter - from June to the end of September - the sea around Sainte Marie island, on the Eastern shore of Madagascar, offers one of the most natural fascinating spectacles in the world. Large groups of humpback whales - Megaptera novaeangliae - make their annual migration from the Antarctic to the sheltered waters around Ste Marie island where they calve, nurse their young and engage in their spectacular courtship rituals between the end of June and September.
For months, humpback whales can be seen wondering in the ocean as they move and jump out of the sea in the narrow canal that separates the island from the mainland.
They are famed for their woodcarving knowledge and art.
In 2003, the Zafimaniry and their work with wood were considered to be Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, a list maintained by UNESCO to protect and preserve their way of life.
This style of woodworking was once common throughout Madagascar but has declined due to deforestation.
Villages are only accessible by trekking for one hours to several days.

A few kilometers south of Ambalavao - the city of zebus market - in this picturesque part of N7, several herds of zebus that are leading to market, occupy the entire road requiring all vehicles to stop.
The legendary Nationale 7 connects the capital Antananarivo to Tulear along the Mozambique Channel in the south-west of Madagascar, towards the Tropic of Capricorn.
N7 is the only paved road on its entire route and passes through both the major cities and most beautiful scenery in the country.

The Madagascar’s Baobab Alley is probably the most famous place in the whole country.

The Furcifer pardalis or Panther Chameleon is a species of chameleon who lives in a tropical forest biome in Madagascar.
It is a common misconception that chameleons of any kind can change colour to match any colour they are up against. All chameleons have a natural colour range with which they are born and is dictated by their species. Colour change is, for the most part, subconscious. It is affected by temperature, mood, and light.
