2008-10-08bq Theatre of Dionysos

The ancient Athenian theatre dedicated to Dionysos (Bacchus), located on the southern slopes of the Acropolis. This open air theatre was in use in one form or another from the 6th century BC to the 3rd or 4th Century AD, but which was mostly built in stone under the direction of Lycurgus of Athens (a notable statesman and orator), around 330 BC. Behind the theatre, further to the south, lies the (then nearly completed) New Acropolis Museum, which opened in 2009. On the far left (off to the East) lie the ruined columns of the Temple of Olympian Zeus, which was built over 640 years up to the 2nd century AD, but pillaged and ruined by barbarians in the 3rd century AD.

Composed from multiple shots taken with a Nikon D40, fitted with a Nikkor AFS DX 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6G II lens. These were then merged into a panorama with MS ICE, and processed with Google Picasa, GIMP and Photoscape.

The tallest hill in Athens. Despite the prominence, it has little mention in Athenian history. The name is thought to either be derived from "Mountain of the Wolves" or from the words for sunrise and sunset, as the hill is always the first and last place in Athens to see sunlight. Atop the hill there sits an open-air theatre and a Chapel to St George (built in the 19th Century).

Taken from the Acropolis with my Nikon D40, fitted with a Tamron 70-300mm F4/5.6 DI LD (Nikon AFS) lens, and processed in GIMP and Photoscape.

Though totally broke at the time I was honoured to be able to serve as one of her photographers as my wedding gift. I hope the photos bring back happy memories for both of them for many years.

Guildford Cathedral, on Stag Hill; next to the University of Surrey and where it and Roehampton University (formerly UoS:Roehampton) holds their graduation ceremonies.

The only Anglican Cathedral built on a new historically unconsecrated site in the South since the Reformation, the Cathedral was comissioned in 1927. However the depression, second world war and austerity of the 50's all conspired to delay consecration until 1961, and completion of the structure until 1966 (though some external statues were only added in 2005). In the 1950's an appeal for funds took the form of a 'buy a brick' campaign; a million bricks (at 2s 6d each - or 12p in new money) were needed for completion and the public had the opportunity to buy and inscribe them with their names prior to installation. This brick exterior is almost disappointingly modernist, but John Betjeman once said "Its red brick exterior belies the really splendidly proportioned nave and aisles within". The Cathedral was also used in the filming of the Omen.

The cross at the Eastern (rear) end was built from the teak timbers of the HMS Ganges, and erected on the hilltop in 1933.

Taken with a Pentax Optio S, then processed with Google Picasa, through an orange filtered B&W effect, a tweak of the contrast, and a crop. Do you prefer this or the colour original?

A friend holding an infra-red clay pigeon shooting shotgun at a celebration of the 60th anniversary for the Babraham Institute, Cambridge, and looking a bit more gangster than I've ever seen him. No clay pigeons were harmed in the making of this image.

Taken with a Pentax Optio S, possibly the last one I'll upload from the wee bairn, as I got my D40 shortly afterwards.

Processed using GIMP to apply a fake-HDR effect (radius 600 pixels) and tweak the curves, then using photoscape to add a low bloom effect, a middle-intensity cinema style filter, then the image was converted to greyscale, a high-intensity portra effect filter applied and finally a middle intensity deepen effect.

Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station contributes to the dark clouds over the bright yellow rape fields in Barton, Nottingham, just south of the River Trent.

Taken with a Pentax Optio S and processed using GIMP to apply 2 fake-HDR effect layers (radius 600 pixels) and tweak the curves, then using photoscape to add a backlight effect (+/-50), a low cross-process effect and a light vignette.
