Orphan children, left behind by their parents because of disability. Due to the work of a few motivated and dedicated people, the children in the orphanage Kharberd receive shelter, food and education. .

Iraqi couple of Armenian ethnicity, who fled Iraq five years ago and now lives in a communal center in Darbnik, near Yerevan, Armenia.

A family of Internally Displaced People (IDP) from South Ossetia, who had to flee during the 199-92 war between South Ossetian separatist forces and Georgia. They now live in the village of Ergneti on the Georgian side of the border. The husband/father was disabled during that war, and died from emotional pressure during the 2008 South Ossetia war. Ergneti itself was largely destroyed during the war in 2008.

Photo taken during a photo project for the Danish Refugee Council, which supports the rehabilitation of the village and its infrastructure.

Xalde Village, Svaneti (Georgia)

Xalde (Khalde) village in Svaneti, Georgia. The village has only a few residents. 1876 the village was burned by Russian troups after a revolt by Svans, and the village was never really resettled.
The vllage is located in the Xalde valley, one of the most beautiful in Svanetia.

Shkara West (5068m) looms in the background. Taken in summer 2011 on a solo hike to look at a route on the rarely climbed Janga Tau (5058m) south side (which we climbed in 2012).

With this climb (from Georgian side, Svaneti) I finished my project to climb and ski all three 5000m mountains of Georgia - Janga-Tau, Shkhara (5193m), and Mkinvartsveri/Kazbek (5034m).

Refugee in Armenia

Rita (45) is an Armenian who fled from Azerbaijan during the 1988-1994 Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. She has lost her memory and suffers from Alzheimer as result of the mental stress sustained during the war.
She lives with her husband in the village of Nor Khachakap, near Vanadzor, Armenia. The village was formerly inhabited by Azeris, who themselves had to flee Armenia for Azerbaijan. The 1988 Spitak earthquake destroyed most of the village, and the inhabitants had to rebuilt it under very difficult conditions.

Taken during a photo project about refugees in the South Caucasus, in collaboration with Helsinki Citizens' Assembly Vanadzor.
