Evening light on Pil Tor, Dartmoor National Park.

I didnt have to wait too long for the sun to light up Pil Tor here, though about an hour later mists rolled in and it was like another season had descended!

While looking for a suitable composition, and restricted due to this vantage point being on the top of the Tor itself, I was finding it hard to use the rocks here to gradually lead the eye in to the scene. I therefore opted to place these rocks slap bang in the middle instead. The result is a 'stubborn' composition that very much leaves Top Tor (on the left) and Haytor and Saddle Tor (on the right) playng second fiddle to Pil Tor itself as it screams for attention in the middle of the frame! I think it works, however, the light was just great and I like to challenge the eye occasionally, with this having quite a rare overall 'T' shape to it; adding a bit of visual tension. Nikon D800E, 16*35mm (at 22mm) ISO 50, 1/4 sec at f/18. 0.9 ND Grad.

The bands of light and shadow in this image made me convert it to black and white and I'm pleased with the result. Shooting in black and white is often seen as a different mindset-if you've ever gone out with a single roll of monochrome film in your camera you will know what I'm on about. I got lucky with this one as I was shooting with a colour mindset!
