Morning on Flagstaff Lake

~
Another image from one of my favorite places, the Cathedral Pines Camground on Flagstaff Lake, Eustis, Maine. This was taken in the same spot -- if not the same morning -- as my image, Flagstaff Lake Sunrise.

Even though it was very cold, each morning I willed myself to get out of the nice, warm, downy sleeping bag in order to catch the sunrise. The reward seemed worth the effort.
Someone to Dance Over Me

~
At a recent Algonquian Powwow, I had the great fortune of meeting and speaking with some of the participants. I mentioned that I'd love to catch some images from interesting angles, such as shooting upward with a wide-angle lens.

Next thing I knew, I was lying on the grass and these two young men were on the project. I'm not sure who was having more fun as I kept coercing them to come in even closer. They eventually went right over me.

I'm building a gallery on my website for my new friends, here at The Algonquin Powwow.
Popsicle Toes

~
As we were winding down our trip to Texas, we stopped by the Brookgreen Gardens in Murrell's Inlet, South Carolina. If you ever get the chance to go, it's an exceptional site, especially when everything is in full bloom. Brookgreen is an old rice plantation, but has been carefully conserved as an extensive garden and sculpture collection.

This is one of my favorite sculptures in the collection, and in this image, I like how the lines of the sculpture play with the lines of the oak trees in the background.

This was processed as an amalgam of three different tonemapped images -- basic, sharp color, and shadowmap -- from a three-exposure bracketed set. Additional processing was done using NIK Color Efex Pro filters.

An Olde John Deere tractor at the Back in Time Museum, on the Riggs Brothers Farm near Pollocksville, NC.

Take a trip back to yesteryear by Viewing On Black, or visit the rest of my photostream on Fluidr.

Tech Bits:

This image took quite a bit of work -- I really hope you like it.

This image was captured as a three-exposure bracket using a Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 lens wide open at 11mm. An HDR was generated in Photomatix Pro, saved as an OpenEXR, then smashed back down to LDR using Photomatix (i.e., tonemapping.)

After some cloning to remove an heinous grease spot on the ground, a bokeh effect was added using Alien Skin's Bokeh software. This helped to eliminate all the modern farm buildings and equipment in the background. Then, remasking with Topaz ReMask was done in order to secure the illusion.

An Orton effect was then applied, courtesy of Rita's Coffee Shop actions. The Orton effect was desaturated a bit, and opacity was reduced to 50%.

The aging effect was done using Nik Color Efex Pro 3.0's Colorize function, and that layer was masked in spots to reduce a too-yellow color cast on the iron (with thanks to Lightpoacher for that bit of advice.) A little sharpening in spots, and done.

So, while taking a break from shooting real estate, what do I do? Sheesh...

This gem was found quite close to the road as we took a long photo-cruise out toward Aurora, NC.
This image was created by making HDR Expose and Photomatix play nice together. I liked the realistic effect from HDR Expose, but enjoyed the funky effect on the building that Photomatix Pro rendered. A little Photoshop... a little Topaz... the place looks livable.
The only thing that stays the same is change...

Some may recognize this old beast, as this is a rework of a previously published image which you can see here. (Link opens in new window or tab.)

I've decided to post this as my lesson learned for the day.

The original "Brockway" came out pretty well, I thought. The tonemapping was most definitely 'pushed', which is what I was going for, and it was chosen as an Editor's Pick at www.hdrspotting.com/.

Lately, though, I've been looking closely at the proliferation of various HDR interpretations, and the pros and cons of each. There are some compositions that beg to be treated in a fantastical way, and they look great when pushed. Good examples, among many, would be the works of Theaterwiz or Anto XIII. Lately, I've heard a fair amount of discussion about a more 'realistic' HDR treatment and the preference that some hold for that style. Plus, I've been doing architectural photography lately and recognize the need not to push things over the top too much.

Enter HDR Photostudio, from Unified Color. I've just gotten started with this program, but so far, it's pretty impressive, especially in terms of producing 'realistic' output. I'll expound on this in a blog entry when I get a few moments. To bottom-line it, I'd say that HDR Photostudio produces a very realistic version in 32-bit, which has distinct advantages. Not that it's perfect: The above image is a composite from the HDR Photostudio output (for the subject and surrounding metal) and a Photomatix tonemap (for the foliage and sky.)

In my opinion, this is a far more accurate representation of what my eyes saw that day, and mighty clear, too. This was just a quick work-up and could use some adjustment -- there are a lot more things I could do with it -- but I found the initial results interesting enough to mention.

What do you think? Do you prefer one style over the other? Is there room for both?
