I had never seen ivy in two tones, so I took a picture of it. The sign identifies it as Atlantic Ivy / Irish Ivy, and provides its official name as Hedera hibernica. There is also a word "Sulphuria" - I don't know what that means.
Kangaroo Paws (S2203106)

Roy Prasad posted a photo:

Filoli Gardens, Woodside, California. Anigozanthos hybrid, also known as Kangaroo Paws, according to people who know such things!

Leica S2 + APO Macro Summarit-S 120/2.5, at f/4.8
S2203106

This was a very difficult flower to photograph. The orange color barely stood out over the background. If I stopped down to f/8, the background became so noisy that the subject simply became part of the clutter. If I opened out to f/2.5, I could barely get anything in focus, and it looked too fuzzy. So I compromised at f/4.8.

Probably the best way to photograph subjects like this is with a flash, to reduce the background to near-blackness, and light up only the subject. It is surprising how such a simple subject is actually quite hard to photograph.

I was not sure if I should upload the image, but I thought it might provide some useful insights.

I was walking past this driveway in a residential neighborhood when it occurred to me there is no good way to take a picture of this. I usually do not like out of focus elements in the foreground. But to get a DoF from a few feet to infinity would require an ultra wide angle lens, but that would put the far end of the drive way so far out that it would appear like a small point.

The only way to shoot a scene like this is probably with a tilt-shift lens.
Found something in purple, although flowers are probably not the right thing for a bunch of football jocks getting ready for a playoff game. But I'm in the middle of a floral roll here, and I couldn't find something more manly in purple, and time is running out!

Good luck to the Minnesota Vikings against the Green Bay Packers on Saturday!

For those who are not familiar with American Football: we are now in the 2012 season-ending elimination-playoffs for championship, known as Superbowl. The Minnesota Vikings are one of the contending teams, and they wear uniforms with purple as the dominant color.

Test shot with Leica S2 + Leica APO Macro Summarit-S 120mm f/2.5

Since the S2 has a sensor that is 50% larger in area than a full-frame 35mm camera, it is hard to figure out its depth of field using standard 35mm calculations. Leica does provide a DoF chart, but it is hard to intuitively feel how the numbers apply to a medium format camera.

So this was a shot aimed at nothing in particular, just to see how much registered in sharp focus. At 120mm f/2.5, the DoF is quite shallow. To get this clump in good focus, I would need to shoot at f/5.6, at least. Or stand much farther away, as in the shot below.
Make way for the V.I.P.!

I was watching these Canadian ducks and taking a few random test shots at one of the many lakes in the San Francisco bay area. Then suddenly, one of the swam up to the shore and started walking up, as if it was searching for something. The other geese all stepped aside and made way, as if a V.I.P. was arriving.

Throughout this time, the one tall goose at the top left corner seemed to be standing guard, keeping an eye out for anything unusual. I tried to get a clear shot of it, but there were always other birds around. The one shot I was able to get, unfortunately the autofocus picked the wrong target.

I don't know if there is some goose dynamics and social behavior at work here... Or maybe it means nothing at all.
