James McCartney (in eyeglasses, shown seated at right), computer scientist and creator of SuperCollider, listens to a developer/performing artist at the SuperCollider Symposium.

He began writing code for SuperCollider when he became unhappy with the problems and limitations of the sound applications of the 1990's. Since 1996, he has released several upgraded versions of SuperCollider.

He anticipates that SuperCollider might be replaced by another developer's software in a few years.

Each horizontal line of the interface represents the opportunity to create a different set of sounds, rhythms and percussion instruments. By combining a variety of rhythms using several parallel lines of the interface, the musical outcome can be as complex and varied as the polyrhythms of African, Cuban or Latin percussion. (Chris Brown described those musical cultural traditions as being early influences on his work.)

Chris Brown, composer, pianist and electronic musician performs his piece "Branches," a partial improvisation and "collaboration" with the computer program he devised, Ritmos. The performance was part of Concert III in the SuperCollider Symposium 2013 presented at ATLAS Institute and the Grusin Concert Hall, May 20 to 24, 2013.

The hand movements of computer science Ph.D. student Charles Dietrich are scanned in real-time by a 3-D camera and software developed by Intel. Software allowed him to have his movements control sound, specifically pitch and volume.
