I snowshoed down to the Lake between storms a few weeks ago, and came away with this. Its been a chilly one so far.

The exposure was long due to the low light levels - no Big Stopper required.

I've wanted to do a night shot by the river for a few months. While it turned out a bit different than I'd imagined, I like it. Due to the subtle tones, this one should be viewed on black.

Oh, and I almost forgot. I was standing on the bank, alone in the dark and SPLASH - a beaver. If you haven't heard one, they're louder than you'd think.

Good Morning Sierras, Owens River

I made a quick trip to Bishop a couple weeks ago. Got to do some hiking, night photography and had a nice morning along the Owens River. There weren't any clouds, but I figured that worked out alright. When I think of the Sierras, I most often picture mountains with a big blue sky - so it’s only fitting I a few images of them that way.

I'd been itching to get to the Sierras all summer, but it never happened. So my fall back position was to make it out for the new moon. I drove down after spending the morning with the family, then came back the following afternoon - it was a short but much needed trip. Hope everyone is doing well.

By the way - the data shows a longer exposure for the mountain. The sky was 30 sec.

Night photography; another reason to miss sleep. The glow on the left is South Lake while the one on the right is Sacramento, I think. It took a while for the sky to fall into place, but I think it was worth staying up. Actually, it was great to get outside with a friend and take some photos.

I haven't been able to get out to shoot lately but was going through old images and came across this one, which I reworked a bit. Believe it or not this is desaturated from the drum scan.

I set out on a 4 day snowshoe trip into the Sierra backcountry (Thousand Island Lake) but was fairly certain I'd be turned back at some point. Mostly I wanted to get a feel for that type of trip so I could get more serious about it in the future. About a third of the way in it became unmanageable (poor snow conditions, no ice axe, hard route...) so I decided to head for the car and go here and then Owens Valley. Glad I did - driving around in comfort and getting scenery like this is hard to beat.

I arrived late, ran down to the trail to the shore and then up the beach to find a composition (I'm sure I'm not alone here)... the 4:30 sunset caught me off guard. After a moment of clarity I stopped running. There was no way I'd find a new composition in time so I went back to something familiar. By the time I took this it was dark, really dark. I'm still amazed at the way a digital camera can see colors well after sunset (depending on the sunset).
Be around soon. The new baby is here...Acacia is doing well :)

It snowed a week prior to this trip and because of that I didn't see anyone else up there - felt like I had the whole place to myself. While this image might not reflect it, the transition to winter was apparent.

Even without the specifics it’s easy to be in awe of the night sky and humbled by our perspective – nonetheless here are some stats: The Milky Way is 100,000 light years in diameter, contains 200–400 billion stars, is moving at 1 million miles per hour and is estimated to be over 13 billion years old.

I've been thinking about an image like this for a while and everything came together on my recent trip to Dusy Basin (11,300 ft). The glow on the horizon is Fresno which is about 60 miles away on the far side of the Park. This a four image vertorama with a separate iso / exposure for the mountains. The exif data shows the exposure for the foreground - the exposure for the sky was 30sec.

Things didn’t go exactly as planned on my recent trip into the mountains, but it was great to get out there again and the view from Second Lake sure was nice.

I had diving booties with me the last few times into the Sierras, but this was the first time I used them. They made standing in the knee deep water for half an hour bearable…even pleasant.

One of the things I like about photography is being forced to wake up and witness the transition from dark to light. This is the same morning as the previous shot but with a more open composition to take in the full moon.

Morning Alpenglow, Ansel Adams Wilderness

This was taken on a recent 4 day loop hike in the Sierras that reminded me how much I love being in the backcountry. Really nice to spend time with my brother and I’m excited about getting out more often in the coming months!

Here’s a rough pano from just prior to our descent from Cecil Lake to Iceberg Lake (a day earlier in the trip) to show the current snow pack. The micro spikes came in handy but weren’t needed for the rest of the hike.
