Ko Jum - เกาะจำ

Koh Jum (Thailand) is a small island, around 25km south of Krabi Town. Ko Lanta is 25km to the south and Phi Phi 20km to the west. The northern part of the island is dominated by the jungle.
The west coast has around 12km of wild and windy beaches, facing the Andaman Sea.

There is nothing much to do on Ko Jum, that's precisely its appeal. No guided tours, no dive schools, no 'attractions' on the island itself: in short, no pressure to be active, or be 'on holiday'. You can just simply be: your time is entirely your own - these days, a luxury few enjoy.

Ko Jum's tempo ranges from slow to inert, and follows an entirely natural rhythm: you wake up early with the sun, and go to sleep a few hours after sunset - which is often an impressive show of light behind the cliffs of Phi Phi on the horizon. Infrastructure is very basic.

The island's 1500 inhabitants live in three main villages: Ko Pu, to the north, Ting Rai in the middle, and Ko Jum in the south. Mainly farmers and fishermen.

There are no cars on Ko Jum, other than those which make deliveries to and from the pier. Most people get around by bicycle, motorbike, or on foot. The roads vary from decent dirt tracks to almost impassable, potholed paths - the latter mostly leading to the beaches.

Thailand - Ko Jum is a relatively small island and most of the population gets around on small 100-125cc motorbikes. Ko Jum or Ko Pu (both are names of two towns/ports on the island) is a tiny island with incredible peaceful and friendly atmosphere.

The name Ko Jum means “Remember Island”. Ko Jum Island is inhabited by just over 3000 people, who earn a living from fishing, cloth weaving and rubber plantations. Koh Jam Krabi has three primary schools providing education for about 600 children.

Ko Jum is spelled in many different ways like Koh, Jum, Ko Jam or Koh Jam, Koh Cham or Ko Cham and the locals often call it Koh Pu or Ko Pu.

Copperband Butterflyfish in Artis Zoo, Amsterdam. The Copperband Butterflyfish or Beak Coralfish (Chelmon rostratus) is found in reefs in both the Pacific and Indian Oceans.

They grow up to 20 cm in length. Found at depths of 1-25 metres either singly or in pairs, forming monogamous pairs during breeding. They are usually found on coral reefs or rocky shorelines, and also in estuaries and silty inner reefs.

Identification:
Upperside of wings dark, with a shiney blue, green or yellow band. Underside brown with a large, conspicuous spots which resemble an owl's eyes. Wing span, 10 to 18 cm.
Range, mainly Tropical regions of Central and South America.

Special feature, owlbutterflies do not feed on flower nectar, but on the juices of rotting fruit.

Kenmerken:
De bovenkant van de vleugels is voornamelijk donker gekleurd, met glimmende groen, blaauw of gele strepen. De onderkant van de vleugels is bruin met opvallende grote oogvlekken, die lijken op uilenogen. Spanwijdte 10 tot 18 cm. Verspreiding, voornamelijk in tropische gebieden van Zuid en midden Amerika.

Deze vlinders bezoeken geen bloemen voor voedsel, maar drinken het sap van rottend fruit.

Wings long and narrow with bright waring colors such as red, yellow, black, in certain species also blue and white. The antennae are relatively long. Wing span: 6 to 10 cm.

Central and South America, also occurs in southern USA.
