Cartoon - Path leading to the base of the Gondola in Gulmarg, in rainy season

Ashish A posted a photo:

The base station of the Gondola in Gulmarg. The Gondola in Gulmarg is very popular, since the gondola provides a good view. We were there in April, when there was a lot of snow on the ground, and it was also raining. So there was some doubt about whether the Gondola would run during the rainy season, and you can see mist in the entire area. Gulmarg is one of the more famous destinations in the state of Jammu and Kashmir in the northernmost state of India. The word Gulmarg means 'meadow of flowers', and during the summer months, Gulmarg really lives up to that name. It is very popular as a hill station, as well as a place which offers ski slopes along with the infrastructure needed for skiing. Gulmarg is not very far from Srinagar, being at a distance of a few hours and 52 kms away from the capital, Srinagar. Gulmarg offers 2 different levels for skiing, with the gondola (the earlier built ski lifts have been abandoned) going to a total height of 3,979 meters and taking the dedicated skiers to a shoulder of the Mt. Afarwat peak. The Gondola also provides a great view of the surrounding areas and is not very expensive. In addition, the slopes can be steep, providing a great experience for those skiers who are looking for a thrilling slope, as well as not being so crowded as the slopers in ski resorts located in western countries.
Some of the attractions in and around Gulmarg includes Tangmarg, the golf course, the Temple (famous for figuring in a Hindi movie song), Alpathar Lake, Baba Reshi Shrine, St. Mary's Church and Khilanmarg.

Cartoon - Kashmiri man selling artificial jewellery from another shikara in the Dal Lake

Two shikaras next to each other - a merchant in one trying to sell artificial jewelery to the family in the other shikara in the Dal Lake. In the background, one can see houseboats and the shore of the lake. The Dal Lake is one of the crowing glories of Srinagar, driving most tourists to the region. The lake is contained within the city of Srinagar and is not very large (you can drive around the outer edge of the lake within a matter of hours), with the outer perimeter being around 16 kilometers. The lake forms an integral part of the economy of the city, with tourism centered around the lake, and with fishing and water plant harvesting also happening on the lake. A large number of tourists live on the lake, in the large and beautiful house boats that are positioned in the lake (and in fixed positions, with all facilities available on the houseboats). In addition, the iconic site of tourists in the shikaras on the lake is a familiar sight, and every tourist does enjoy such a ride.
The gardens near the shore of the Lake (Shalimar, Nishaant, Chasme-Shahi) were developed by the great Mughal rulers who loved the climate of Kashmir and are incredibly beautiful. The lake is not very deep, with the deepest part of the lake being 6 meters. The unfortunate part is that for the past several decades, the lake has been seeing a reduction in the area covered by the lake, although in the past several years, there has been an effort to reduce the reasons for the reduction in the area covered by the lake. The lake is fed by some perennial streams and by spring sources.
During winter the lake presents another level of charm for tourists, with the temperate in Srinagar falling below zero, and the water surface of the lake freezing over. An incredible view of the lake is seen from the heights of the hill on which the Shankaracharya temple is located as also from Hari Parbat.

This was a souvenir ship located very close to the Gondola base station in Gulmarg, with the interesting concept that it was built over a path where water would flow in a torrent during rain, as could be seen in this photo.
Multiple families relaxing in multiple Shikaras in the Dal Lake in Srinagar

A set of shikaras in the Dal Lake side by side. The shikara is one of the most iconic symbol of the Dal Lake, and no trip on the Dal Lake is complete without a trip on them, as multiple families in this example are doing. In the background can be seen the shore of the lake along with buildings and trees.

The Dal Lake is an eco-system of its own. With the large number of houseboats here and the tourists they attract, there are a large number of people here to cater to their needs. An incredible view of the lake is seen from the heights of the hill on which the Shankaracharya temple is located as also from Hari Parbat.

Cartoon - Floating shop (shikara) along with another shop on floats in the Dal Lake in Srinagar
The Dal Lake is an eco-system of its own. With the large number of houseboats here and the tourists they attract, there are a large number of people here to cater to their needs. The local people also live here, move in the lake on smaller boats, setup local floating markets in the lake and use it as a transportation system. This photo shows an example of the commerce on the lake, with a shikara being like a floating shop, providing tourists in their houseboats with cold drinks, juices, and such. Behind the shikara is a shop on stilts that provides telephone services, and other such stuff. The Dal Lake is one of the crowing glories of Srinagar, driving most tourists to the region. The lake is contained within the city of Srinagar and is not very large (you can drive around the outer edge of the lake within a matter of hours), with the outer permiter being around 16 kilometers. The lake forms an intergal part of the economy of the city, with tourism centered around the lake, and with fishing and water plant harvesting also happening on the lake.
Cartoon - Visitors inside the Shalimar Garden with the backdrop of mountains in Srinagar

The Shalimar Gardens in Srinagar, on the banks of the Dal Lake are very beautiful. The garden has been divided into several terraces to account for the gentle slope of the hill on which it has been created. At the time we went, the water channel was being repaired, but even with that, it was very beautiful. The Shalimar Garden is a very beautiful garden located on the right bank of the Dal Lake in Srinagar, the capital of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is one of the famous gardens on the banks of the Dal Lake, located on the slope of a mountain. The garden is supposed to have existed from historical times, but became very famous when it was adopted by the Mughal Emperor Jahangir in 1619, built for his wife Nur Jahan. As a result, the garden (along with other gardens) are called Mughal Gardens. Jahangir was so enamored with Kashmir that he spent a large amount of time over here, using Srinagar as a summer capital for his empire. Over a period of time, the garden was extended and electrified. It is one of the high points of the tourist attractions in the city of Srinagar.
The gardens are supposed to be based on a layout called Persian Gardens. However, these gardens were supposed to be built on flat surfaces, while the Shalimar Garden was built on a hill, and hence the garden was split into 3 terraces. The garden covers an area of 31 acres and also provides a great view of the Dal Lake. Running through the center of the Shalimar Garden is a 12 m wide canal that carried water through the garden and flows into the Dal Lake. The garden is full of greenery, with some very beautiful trees.

Cartoon - Boat among the weeds - man rowing his boat in the Dal Lake in Srinagar

Prints available at bit.ly/17zRURu

Man rowing his boat in the Dal Lake of Srinagar. In the background are all the houseboats that are the prime tourist attraction of the area. Also, the shallow nature of the lake at this point is evident, with the weeds in the water being plainly visible.

Kashmiri man taking a break from rowing a bright yellow shikara in the waters of the Dal Lake in Srinagar. The Dal Lake is an eco-system of its own. With the large number of houseboats here and the tourists they attract, there are a large number of people here to cater to their needs.
Cartoon - Multiple number of shikaras on the water of the Dal Lake in Srinagar with the background of houseboats

Prints available at bit.ly/17DqxpE

The Dal Lake is an eco-system of its own. With the large number of houseboats here and the tourists they attract, there are a large number of people here to cater to their needs. The local people also live here, move in the lake on smaller boats, setup local floating markets in the lake and use it as a transportation system. Here, you can see a number of shikaras apparently moving in the same direction, but almost none of them are carrying any tourists as of now. In the distance, you can see a large number of house boats.
