Miles and miles of coastal wetlands in southern Louisiana stretch off into the horizon. These areas should be labeled as endangered habitat, as they are slowly sinking and eroding into the Gulf of Mexico.

Never know what you'll find on the beaches of Galveston. Since its Kemps ridley nesting season, it very well could be a nesting female! Taking a breather from her trek back to the water, this gal posed in front of a Galveston icon before resuming her crawl back to the water...what a day!!

Intracoastal City, Louisiana, a very small, hurricane obliterated town along the Louisiana coast., is home to a handful of shrimpers and is one of the many bases for the offshore oil and gas industry. 32 degree temperatures brought a low-lying fog to the coast.

Arguably one of the earth's most endangered ecosystems on earth. This is the Pass A Loutre area, heading towards the open Gulf of Mexico. This area was adversely effected by the oil spill.

A sandhill crane stretches its wings while disinterested flock-mates pluck dinner from a West End field on Galveston Island. The island serves as a wintering ground for many sandhill cranes. As more and more island natural spaces face encroachment by developers, there exists the real possibility of winters without these tall beauties, something that would be a terrible loss.

A black skimmer works the shallows of the beach, looking for stray fish to hit its beak so it can toss the fish up and into its mouth. Really neat to watch...

The wake of our crewboat pushes crashing surf into the wetlands surrounding this bayou along the Freshwater City canal. Louisiana is a water state, dependent on her swamps, bayous,marshes, and coastal wetlands for life sustaining resources and interstate commerce.

A great blue heron works hard to swallow its slippery meal-I think a freshwater siren. Herons, egrets, ducks, cormorants, anhingas, etc...are found at Brazos Bend State Park, a GREAT place to bird and 'alligator'.

From a VERY high helicopter ride over the Gulf of Mexico. The sun reflects off Louisiana coastal wetlands. Not exactly sure what happened to the horizon, but I am very happy with the results...made me feel like an astronaut or something...

Fog cloaks a channel and surrounding wetlands in coastal Louisiana. Freezing temperatures and warmer water made for a beautiful sunrise as I headed offshore. Channels like this criss-cross the coastal Louisiana wetlands. Most were created by oil and gas companies to facilitate transportation to their remote oil and gas wells in coastal areas...one of the contributing factors in the dissappearance of coastal wetlands.
