Ice Explorer on the Athabasca Glacier

elementalPaul posted a photo:

I'm really proud of of this picture - I'd never have imagined that I'd get such a good image taken freehand, in the snow, on a glacier!!!

The Athabasca Glacier covers an area of 6km² (2.5mi²), has a length of 6km (3.75miles) and a depth ranging from 90 - 300, (270 - 1000ft). The glacier is currently receding at a rate of about two to three meters a year. 75% of the worlds drinking water comes from glaciers.

The Columbia Icefield (of which this glacier is a part) covers 325km² (125mi²) and reaches depths estimated at 365m (1299 ft). The meltwaters from the icefield flow to three different oceans; the Pacific, Arctic and Atlantic.

I was concerned about the environmental impact of my visit to the glacier but, as the guide pointed out, it's better to manage these sort of trips rather than have people wandering around the glacier themselves.

Did I mention I took this on a glacier? :-)
