Stamping Out Crime

Greater Manchester Police posted a photo:

Two officers of Lancashire County Constabulary gaze intently through the door of a post office in Leigh. Perhaps they had seen a possible offence in progress or were simply greeting members of staff as they passed on their beat. On the other hand, maybe the station had run out of stamps.

This image is from a set labelled Lancashire County Constabulary Training Slides and depicts various officers on patrol in the town centre, at work in the police station or undertaking a variety of other duties.

They set forms part of the collection of the Greater Manchester Police Museum and Archive, which is currently being digitized, and contains many marvellously evocative images of policing in the past.

We originally though this set of images, taken in and around Leigh, dated from
the early 1970s, however sharp-eyed viewers have pointed out that they are more likely to be the late 1960s.

We hope you enjoy this glimpse of bygone Leigh. We will be publishing further images from this series in the near future.

While there is much comment about the weather this summer, especially the amount of rain, history tells us that similar conditions are not unprecedented in our region.

This image, we think dating from the 1930s, depicts a bus that appears to stranded in flood water on Oldham’s appropriately named Waterloo Street.

This image was produced by Oldham Borough Police. This force existed between 1849 and 1969. Policing in Oldham then became the responsibility of Lancashire County Constabulary until the formation of Greater Manchester Police in 1974.
Getting in the Picture

This sergeant of Rochdale Borough Police obviously wasn’t camera shy. He appears to have made every effort to ensure he was centre stage when this official image was taken, despite the fact he was no doubt there to ensure law and order were maintained. In his defence, it must have been a rare opportunity to appear in the local newspaper. Besides, the crowd don't look bent on breaking the law and it was probably too good a chance to miss.

Sadly, we don’t know a great deal about the photograph, other than it seems to depict the ceremonial laying of a foundation stone for a building and it was probably taken in the 1920s.

A closer look reveals some wonderful facial expressions. We particularly like the look being given by the woman to the right of the official couple.

Do you know which building was under construction or who is performing the ceremonial laying of the first stone?
Taking Up the Tram Tracks in Oldham

A member of Oldham Borough Police watches on at a distance as the force’s photographer takes this image of roadworks on Hollins Road.

It appears that the work involves the removal of tram tracks and their replacement with the familiar cobbles of the day.

We are unsure of the exact date of this image but the tram service in Oldham ceased in August 1946 and this set of images all date from around the end of that decade through to the late 1950s.

The Metrolink system saw trams return to Oldham in 2012 and work will continue on this section of the system’s development until 2014.

The Greater Manchester Police Museum and Archives collection, which is currently being digitised, has produced a series of marvellously evocative images of policing in the past.

Some of the most nostalgic images to be unearthed are a series of images taken in and around Leigh during the late 1960s. They come from a set of images labelled Lancashire County Constabulary Training Slides and depict various officers on patrol in the town centre, at work in the police station or undertaking a variety of other duties.

This section of the slideshow appears to be aimed at teaching young officers the basics of vehicle related offences.

We hope you enjoy this glimpse of bygone Leigh. We will be publishing further images from this series in the near future.
Oldham Motocycle Inspection

The Chief Constable of Oldham Borough Police looks somewhat out of his time as he watches an inspection of the force’s motorcyclists while wearing spurs and carrying a sword.

Many early chief constables were former military officers and brought much of army - especially the cavalry - uniform and traditions to the service. However, by the time this image was taken, probably in the late 1930s, the world had changed and the horse had been superseded by motorised transport.

The inspection is probably being conducted by one of Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC).

The HMIC still operates today and regularly inspects forces to ensure they are operating effectively.

We are not sure what is taking place in this image of Lancashire Constabulary officers in Ashton-under-Lyne. Perhaps they are planning an operation, undertaking a search, or just plain lost but the image does have a Dad's Army feel.

Whatever the reason, the map held by the sergeant seems to be at the centre of everyone’s attention. It might be that it was close to lunchtime - ‘refs’ in police speak – and they were looking for the quickest way back to the canteen.

Ashton-under-Lyne Borough Police was formed in 1848 and policed the town for exactly a century before the force became part of Lancashire Constabulary in 1948. Things changed again in 1974 and the area, with the addition of Hyde and Stalybridge, became the Tameside (G) Division of Greater Manchester Police.

The ongoing digitisation of Greater Manchester Police Museum’s huge collection of images has unearthed some fabulous images of policing in the region over the last 150 years but every so often we discover an image that seems a little out of place.

Meet Alf Wilson. He appears on a image captioned ‘The Famous Fasting Man of Stockport, Lancs.’
The image is printed on a postcard and seems to have been intended as a commerative or promotional item.

We have no other information relating to Mr Wilson or his fasting exploits and we have no idea if he had any connection with local policing.

Can you help? Do you know the story behind this intriguing image?
Who Knew the Famous Fasting Man?

An officer patrols the streets of Leigh in the late 1960s. He is wearing the famous blue shirt that was an icon of policing for many years. It appears that he has completed his patrol and is retuning to Leigh Police Station from the direction of the town centre.

The collection of the Greater Manchester Police Museum and Archive which is currently being digitised, has produced a series of marvellously evocative images of policing in the past.

The latest gems to be unearthed are a series of images taken in and around Leigh during, we originally thought, the early 1970s. However sharp-eyed viewers have pointed out that they are more likely to be the late 1960s.
They come from a set of images labelled Lancashire County Constabulary Training Slides and depict various officers on patrol in the town centre, at work in the police station or undertaking a variety of other duties.

We hope you enjoy this glimpse of bygone Leigh. We will be publishing further images from this series in the near future.

The owner of this shop must have felt very secure as he lent against his doorframe and spotted two officers of Lancashire County Constabulary standing rigidly to attention outside his premises. We expect he had no problems with shoplifters whilst they remained but they might have scared away a few potential customers as well.

The owner of this shop must have felt very secure as he lent against his doorframe and spotted two officers of Lancashire County Constabulary standing rigidly to attention outside his premises. We expect he had no problems with shoplifters whilst they remained but they might have scared away a few potential customers as well.

This image, captioned ‘2 PCs outside King St Market’ is from a set labelled Lancashire County Constabulary Training Slides and depicts various officers on patrol in the town centre, at work in the police station or undertaking a variety of other duties.
This set forms part of the collection of the Greater Manchester Police Museum and Archive, which is currently being digitized, and contains many marvellously evocative images of policing in the past.
the early 1970s, however sharp-eyed viewers have pointed out that they are more likely to be the late 1960s.
Rochdale Detectives of 1875

They may look a little like the Wild Bunch waiting for Butch Cassidy, but about the same time as those outlaws were terrorising the Wild West, these men were keeping the local criminals in check in their role as detectives in the Rochdale Borough Police. The similarity with images of Cassidy and his gang is not as strange as it seems. Butch (real name Robert Parker) Cassidy’s parents lived just up the road in Preston until the 1850s. Perhaps the dapper style was common to the area at the time.

Rochdale Borough Police began life on the 28th of February 1857, one year after the County and Borough Police Act of 1856 made the provision of a police service compulsory in all areas.

Captain John H Callender was appointed the force’s first chief officer and began work on 11th of March with instructions to recruit and train officers to begin patrolling the streets on 13th of April.

Captain Callender, who began his police career in Manchester in 1839, set to work and soon the style of uniform to be worn by the new officers was decided upon. They were to wear a blue frock coat, blue trousers and a tall hat. They would also be equipped with a great coat and cloth cape for use in inclement weather.

On the 8th of April, Captain Callender was sworn in along with two sergeants, John Cragg and Thomas Greenwood, and twelve constables. The new force got off to a difficult start, with many of the first constables soon dismissed for various breaches of discipline. It also found itself needing to be reinforced by Lancashire County Constabulary when riots and disorder broke out in July of the same year.

In September the force was inspected by Lt. Col Woodford, HM Inspector of Constabulary. He considered the force to be very creditable in appearance but insufficient in number.

In 1858 it was reported that the running cost for the first year of operation came to £1,235 1s 7d.

Despite difficult beginnings the force found its feet and so began a tradition of an independent force for Rochdale that lasted until the force was amalgamated with Lancashire Constabulary in 1969. In 1974 the newly formed Greater Manchester Police took over responsibility for policing the area and today it forms the Rochdale Division of the GMP.

There appears to be something comic about this image of the afternoon shift leaving Leigh Police Station in the 1960s, especially with the leading officer's helmet seeming to be on the verge of falling off his head. We suspect that police humour may have played a part in this image and the officers may well have been having a little fun at the expense of the force's photographer. At the least, we suspect someone was a whistling a certain well known tune.
